The wheel wear at each step in traverse grinding is closely related to accumulation phenomenon and size generation mechanism on the wheel surface. In order to make wheel wear process in traverse grinding clear, an experimental analysis was conducted by widely changing the grinding length,
L. The following results were obtained : (1) The wheel wear,
d0 (
n), at each step on the surface assumes a maximum value at the first step and decreases stepwise at later step. (2) The real cutting depth of wheel, Δ (
n), and the size generation amount, Δ
R (
n), are closely related to the changing process of wheel wear. The step which has maxima of Δ (
n) and Δ
R (
n) simultaneously proceeds from the first step to a later step sequentially as
L increases. (3) Investigation of the effects of the speed ratio,
Kv, the setting depth of wheel, Δ
T, and the number of total steps,
m, on the wheel wear results in the following; the rate of increase of
d0 (
n) becomes large as the values of
Kv and Δ
T increase, and has nothing to do with the value of
m.
