    In this paper, under such various conditions as shapes and rubber hardnesses of contact wheels, grinding speeds and settings of cut, the tension acting upon the abrasive belt by means of detecting the electrical signal from a strain gauge passed on the inside of abrasive belt is researched experimentally. Moreover, by using the relation between the tension and depth of cut ratio, it is clarified that a selection method from both the shape of the contact wheel and the most suitable ratio of the effective depth of cut to setting of cut under the various grinding conditions are obtained. The main results obtained are follows. (1) It is impossible to get the shape of the contact wheel which has the most suitable ratio of the effective depth of cut to setting cut from the relation between depth of cut and tangential or normal force acting upon the contact wheel in grinding. However, it makes possible to decide the range between the effective maximum and minimum depth of cut ratio by using the tension and suitable shape of the contact wheel can also be obtained from the effective range mentioned above. (2) Considering the relation between the surface roughness of workpiece and the land height of the contact wheel, the surface finish comes to be bad in the contact wheel giving the suitable depth of cut ratio. However, the shape of the con-tact wheel which has the most effective surface roughness and depth of cut ratio must be decided by this method.

    以上, 関節形マニピュレータの腕部, 手首部および指部における2自由度動作の駆動機構に差動歯車機構を利用する方法について述べた.その際の特徴として,
    (1) 機構的に実現が容易である.
    (2) 構造的にはアクチュエータの集中的配置ができ, かつアクチュエータの小形化が可能となる.
    (3) 柔的, 剛的動作を有効に使い分けることにより,
    種々の動作機能を与えることができる.
    などが得られた.また柔的動作を積極的に利用した例として順応指を示し, その指のもつ順応動作が物体把握の動作制御の簡易化に有効であることを示した.
    また, 実用的なマニピュレータのメカニズムの実現とその制御方法および剛的, 柔的動作の実作業上での有効な利用手法については別の機会にゆずることにする.

    This paper deals with applicabilities and some prob-lems of a foundational chatter forecasting method by which an onset of chatter is predicted when a forecasted future acceleration variance series reaches a predefined level and an improved forecasting method is reported. It is revealed theoretically that indications of chatter are interpreted as changes of frequency components and then are grasped more reasonably by the mean square frequency and experimentally that the indications always appear in sound signals but not always in acceleration signals and a realistic onset of chatter can be defined as the point that the sound mean square frequency decreases to 0.83 of its maximum. It becomes clear both experimentally and theoretically that the levels of the mean square frequencies and variances at the realistic onset of chatter change along specific curves corresponding to cutting conditions and consequently applications of the foundational method are confined to a narrow range of cutting conditions. A new forecasting method widely applicable can be made by using the ratios of changes of the mean square frequencies and a permissible length of the lead time for exact forecasting is almost the same as that of chatter indication which is 0.22-1. 15 s experimentally.

    In metal cutting, the cutting force consists of static and dynamic components. In earlier works of metal cutting, however, a little attention has been paid to the dynamic component in steady cutting condition. To understand the behavior of the dynamic component in more detail, in this study, the static and dynamic components of cutting forces in turning were measured by a dynamometer of piezoelectric type, and the frequency components of cutting forces were also analyzed. From the measured results, the effects of cutting conditions and work materials on the dynamic components of cutting forces were investigated, when turning the workpieces made of steel, cast iron and brass. As a result, the following conclusions can be obtained. (1) The characteristics of the tool system have a large effect on the dynamic component of cutting forces, though this effect depends considerably on the kinds of the work materials. (2) In all of work materials examined here, the dynamic component of cutting forces is in close relation to a chip formation. (3) The maximum amplitude of the dynamic component of cutting forces is propotional to the cutting area. The ratio between the dynamic and static components is thus almost constant, though the value of ratio itself changes depending on the cutting speed and work material.

    Fine short-length metal fibres are considered to have various applications such as fibrous composite materials, but existing methods of producing such fibres are inefficient and costly. A new manufacturing process, named “Chatter Machining”, of fine short-length metal fibres using self-excited vibration of an elastic tool in the lathe turning is proposed here. This Chatter Machining makes it possible to produce fine metal fibres, with diameter varying from 10 μm to 250 μm and with length from 0. 5 mm to 20 mm, directly from most kinds of round metal bar efficiently and inexpensively. The mechanism of fibre formation in Chatter Machining is described, based on experimental results.

    For the efficient metal cutting operation, the chip control is one of the most serious problems at the present. In the turning operation, thin and/or ductile chips cause trouble because they are hard-ly broken. But, when a curved section is given to such chips, they can be broken at small deflection. Curved rake face for this purpose is studied in this paper, and cylindrical groove and spherical pit properly located on rake faces are shown to increase the chip breaking ability of tool. Based on the results of series of test, a rake face having a double spherical pit is developed. This rake face is very effective to produce broken chip in the turning under wide range of cutting conditions including very small feed. When the cutting tool with this shape of rake face is compared with standard tools, no apparent difference in cutting forces and tool wear are observed.

    In the grinding process the effects of grinding conditions on the accuracy and quality of the work-piece are not clear sufficiently. Those are the main difficulty to promote the efficiency of the grinding process. From that viewpoint this study takes note of the plunge grinding which is the representative grinding method, and analyzes the grinding phenomenon theoretically and experimentally. The aim of this study is to decide the ideal in-feed curve which fulfills the requirements of high efficiency, accuracy and quality based on the distinct basis of evaluation. In this report the formulation of real cutting depth, normal grinding force and wheel wear were conducted and a mathematical model of the plunge grinding was constructed. Then making use of this model the size generation process and the process changes of grinding phenomenon were analyzed quantitatively under some in-feed processes and a fundamental theory was developed to obtain the ideal in-feed curve.

    Circular magnetic scales are used widely as rotary encoders, and conventionally, they are calibrated by measurement of intervals of pulses which are generated from the output of magnetic head. But for the improvement of circular magnetic scales in their accuracy, it has been necessarily required to establish new methods to measure the graduations themselves of scales. As one of the methods, a prototyped automatic calibrating equipment using a high precision index table, a laser interferometer, a micro-computer and a desktop computer, is manufactured. In this method, the index table is used for the standard of angle, and angular errors are transformed into position errors on the tangent of the scale, which are measured by laser interferometer. During experimental measurements of two kinds of scales, it has been confirmed that this calibrating equipment assures us that errors are smaller than +O. 5 second of arc.
