    One trial is reported on producing deformed lines of an object scanned by a laser beam, that is, socalled deformed grating patterns. Such properties inherent in a laser beam as being narrow in width and high in intensity can be effectively utilized for the purpose. With the aim of getting appropriate patterns, geometrical relations between a rotating mirror and an incident light are investigated, and a practical scanning apparatus is deviced and manufactured as a prototype. The photographic pattern of the object with deformed grating lines reveals Moire fringes showing contours mapping when superimposed by a reference grating. Experimental applications with one pair of these patterns show that cross sections of the object can be drawn and that piling up these sections can reproduce the original shape of the subject body.

    The present research aims to clarify the grindability of vanadium PM HSS by comparing with that of conventional HSS (produced by melting process). The effects of lowering peripheral wheel speed are also investigated on the grinding performances of HSS. Following results are obtained. (1) When grinding high vanadium PM HSS by wheel with low hardness, two types of wheel wear behavior are observed. Wheel wear rate is relatively small at low table speed and large at high table speed. (2) In grinding PM HSS having high vanadium content, the wheel wear, the thermal affected layer and the deformation (concaveness) of ground surface are remarkably small comparing with those in grinding conventional HSS. (3) In PM HSS, grain size of vanadium carbide is very fine and the shape of grinding chips is thin and long. (4) In the case of low peripheral wheel speed, the grinding temperature and the deformation (concaveness) of ground surface are smaller than those in normal peripheral wheel speed. And in grinding PM HSS, the grinding ratio is twice as large as that measured in normal peripheral wheel speed.

    The present paper deals with feed rate of wirecut electrochemical machining. The effect on the feed rate was investigated of various parameters; velocity of the electrolyte flow, diameter of the nozzle, material, diameter and tension of the wire, pulse period and peak value of the applied voltage, etc. On the assumption that the rate is limited by accumulation of generated sludge of gas, the equation of the rate and the favorable pulse period are derived and verified experimentally. The rate is proportional to [(EE) υ/W] 1/2 (E; applied voltage. ΔE; decomposition voltage, υ; electrolyte velocity, . W; thickness of workpiece). The rate can be improved by applying shorter pulse period than the residential time W/υ of the electrolyte. Above the critical electrolyte pressure, at which the feed rate shows maximun value, the unfavorable effect of the wire vibration cannot be neglected. Countermeasures to prevent it are as follows; (a) reduction of nozzle diameter and length of wire span, (b) increase in applied voltage and wire tension.

    Contact deformation characteristics of grinding and regulating wheels are found to have stabilization effect on self-excited chatter vibrations. A new model of centerless grinding system including the effect is proposed. Characteristic equation of the model is analyzed using diagrammatical coincidence method and growing rate of chatter vibration can be quantitatively studied. Furtheremore, concept of root-locus method is introduced and distribution loci of characteristic roots corresponding to various grinding conditions are derived. And rounding effect criterion diagram representing generalized growing mechanism of chatter vibration is newly proposed. Applying this new diagram, it becomes possible to specify stable grinding domain and set up stable grinding operations. Also the diagram can give guide lines of wheel selection and design specification of centerless grinding machine in viewpoint of strategies for stabilization of chatter vibration.

    A new type of tracer for copy milling machines has been successfully developed in order to produce the die cavity at considerably higher accuracy than that of the conventional tracer. Tracing mechanism and accuracy of this new tracer are discussed comparing with the conventional tracer. The new tracer has a special mechanism which makes the stylus always ahead of the cutting tool in the direction of tracing feed. Detecting the small displacement of the stylus caused by the variation of inclination of the model profile, the direction of tracing feed is corrected. It has been experimen tally ascertained that the new tracer gives remarkably high tracing accuracy because of small dis placement of the stylus. Tracing inaccuracy of the new tracer depends only upon the inclination of the model profile, therefore the error can be easily compensated by using a stylus slightly larger than the cutting tool.

    When a cylindrical gear is cut by a hobbing machine, the tooth frank is usually formed by feeding the cutter along the axis of blank rotation. In making a gear of small face width it is difficult to eliminate the long idle time which takes up a large proportion of the total machining time because it must usually includes the stroke time for approaching and receding from the work in addition to the net tooth width feeding time. A new system employing a specially shaped hobbing cutter can drastically improve the efficiency in hobbing especially for a gear having a small face width, e. g. a ring gear in F. F. automobile, only by subjecting the gear to tooth profile shaping while simultaneously cutting the tooth trace. The fundamental analysis and the examination on infeed hobbing was performed. Hob profile suitable for the infeed hobbing was obtained and the paths of contact and the limit of meshing between the hob and the gear was analyzed. An infeed hob was manufactured. and a gear made by the hob was found to be available for use as a roughing blank before shaving.

    This paper deals with a numerical calculating method of flexural rigidity of radial cross-sections of helical end mills. The results are as follows. (1) Flexural rigidity is obtained by eq. (3) that is calculated by using coordinates of triangular elements including the center of end mill. (2) End mills behave isotropic with three teeth and more but anisotropic with two teeth. Such results are analysed by the numerical calculating method in the present work. (3) It is clear that a fillet of shank plays an important role in the rigidity of end mill. Calculated values of deflection of end mills show a good coincident with empirical data by static loads at the bottom of end mill. (4) The radial cross-sections give considerable similarity among various diameters of end mills, and rotational symmetricity and congruency among teeth of an end mill in the same helical angle in macroscopic view point.

    In this paper, for a basic study to evaluate quantitatively the grinding ability of a grinding wheel which has irregularity of grade on its surface, grinding phenomenon that occurs during grinding process with such the wheel is considered. The results obtained are as follows : (1) Even if wheel balance is almost perfect, the wheel which has irregularity of grade on the surface influences its grinding ability. (2) Irregularity of grade on the wheel surface acts as one of the source of forced vibration and influences grinding force and shape accuracy of a ground-workpiece. (3) For quantitative evaluation of grinding ability of a wheel, both the average grade and its irregularity must be considered. (4) Based on ultrasonic pulse method, both the average grade and its irregularity can be measured, and so this method gives us one of the effective procedure to evaluate grinding ability of a wheel.

    To develope a plated media, the feasibility of obtaining protective film materials was studied on three silicon compounds, sputtered SiO2, Si3N4 and spincoated SiO2. Each 80 nm thick Si compound protective film was successfully developed. Moreover, to meet requirements for higher recording density disks, materials for thinner protective film thickness were studied. Protective film performances were estimated by wear after 20000 contactstart-stop tests with a taper-flat ferrite head, by corrosion resistance which would cause no signal error increase for 5 years under 50% R. H. and by productivity. An 80 nm protective film thickness has been chosen as a result of a compromise between wear durability and corrosion resistance, and reduction in read/write characteristics. The spincoated film was selected because of the good corrosion resistance and the excellent productivity. Two layer composite protettive films, composed of sputtered Cr oxide and sputtered SiO2, are feasible for higher recording density plated disks, since corrosion resistance for 30 nm composite films is better than that for 80 nm simple SiO2 films.

    The shape generation process of work and tool is investigated in the rotation/reciprocation lapping by treating their surfaces as those of the second order of revolution and those of the fourth order of revolution. Simulation of the abrading process is done, first, in the reciprocation lapping and second in the rotation/reciprocation lapping. Experiments are carried out by using cast iron lap and diamond tool as lower or upper workpieces. Simulated and experimental results indicate that even in case of using the tool, the process has almost the same fundamental properties as were found in combining the same kinds of workpiece as lower and upper ones and is delineated by constructing each flow prescribed by two different linear vector fields. Further, it is shown that less undulation is expected on the surface of the work when the tool was set as the upper workpiece.

    In the 1st report, design information about the improved hydrostatic lead screw, which has new types of oil pockets and restrictors, was shown; besides the structure and mechanism, the virtual bearing area and the property of the restrictors were also shown. In the present paper, the thrust and radial stiffness, which are essential for lead screws, are analysed by both numerical and experimental methods. Experimental values of the tiffness can be calculated from the displacement of the supported member when either the load or the supply pressure is varied. The experimental results obtained by such measurements show good agreement with the numerical results, and it is proved that both the thrust and radial stiffness can be improved by increasing the number of oil pockets, while the influence of the circumferential flow on the stiffness is negligible. These analyses prove that the newly designed oil pockets and restrictors not only facilitate the manufacture but also improve the performance of the hydrostatic lead screw.

    This report deals with the properties of impact activity and the optimum impact conditions on a hammering machine with a spring suspended hammer. The conditions are defined by considerations of impact motion of the hammer. In the study, impact activity of the machine are evaluated by impulse per one impact or the total amount of impulse per second. It has been considered that the frequency condition of the maximum impulse agrees at resonance, z=1, but in practice there is the frequency ratio z in 1<z<2. Definition of Op and Om points, developed as the optimum conditions in one shot, are as follows : The former is the condition which minimizes the impulse change over a practical useful setting gap range, and the latter gives the maximum impulse in the gap range. The Op point is fitted for a large amount of working because the impulse change is small on the wide gap change and various work thickness. On the other hand, Om point is applied to the opposite purposes for the Op point. Optimum conditions on the total amount of impulse per second are also developed in the same manner and called on Op' and Om' points.

    This paper deals with influences of grinding conditions upon a grinding fluid quantity in wheelworkpiece interface. In creep feed grinding, which has a long arc of contact, grinding fluid cannot be supplied sufficiently into the wheel-workpiece interface. In order to evaluate the quantity of grinding fluid supplied into the wheel-workpiece interface, a new method capable of measuring a film thickness of grinding fluid has been developed. Moreover, a segmental wheel achieving throughwheel coolant has been made in order to supply a large quantity of grinding fluid into the wheelworkpiece interface. As a result of investigation. of the film thickness distribution in the wheelworkpiece interface, the followings became evident. (1) The film thickness is larger near the starting point of cutting than near the end of cutting. (2) The minimum value of film thickness decreases with an increase in wheel depth of cut, but is independent of work speed. (3) The minimum value of film thickness increases with either an increase in flow rate of grinding fluid or an increase in grit number of wheel. (4) The segmental wheel is effective and suitable for the creep feed grinding.

    Stiffness affects either a residual stock removal behavior and a self-excited chatter vibration, both of which are usually caused by the deflections of grinding wheel and work-support systems in ordinary grinding machine. Hence, the stiffness design method which makes the machine free from both behaviors with rational amount of static and dynamic stiffnesses is desired so far. The present paper proposes the way how much amount of static stiffness should be recommended in order to obtain proper spark-out time for a residual stock removal. This recommended static stiffness is then divided to the wheel and work-support systems in such a way as to obtain minimum damping ratios, but enough to avoid an occurrence of chatter vibration from each system. In the case when those damping ratios may become larger than the value which can be realized in ordinary cast iron or welded machine tool structures, the initial static stiffness is increased gradually until the damping ratio will reach to the settled reasonable value. This repetitive operation method is developed.

    A new precision displacement measuring method using a diffraction grating was investigated. In this paper, the measuring principle and the experimental results are described. The measuring principle is based on an interference phenomenon. Interference fringes are produced by superposing of a pair of positive and negative order diffraction beams obtained by illuminating the grating perpendicularly with a monochromatic light beam. The displacement of the grating causes sinusoidal change in brightness of the fringes. The displacement measurement is carried out by counting the fringes photoelectronically. Experimental system was constructed by using a reflection grating with the period of 1.43 μm and a laser diode as the monochromatic light source. The measuring performance with the precision of 0.1 μm over the range of 20 mm was confirmed in the experiment. An application to two-dimensional displacement measurement is also proposed.

    This paper treats the method of moving a particle by means of vibratory actuator which is attached to the particle. These devices are named vibratory movers. When a particle is moved without jumping on a sliding surface, the motion of the particle is represented by the combinations of three basic motions, i. e. positive slip, negative slip and stick motion. Therefore the moving velocity of the particle is not uniform throughout one period of vibration due to intermittent sticking and slipping motions, and the mean moving velocity must be calculated. The vibratory movers are classified into three types according to the structure. They are direct actuated type, multi-degrees-of-freedom type and electromagnet type. In this paper, the direct actuated type and two-degrees-of-freedom type are discussed analytically. In the direct actuated type, the equations of motion of the particle are similar to those of vibratory conveying. The relations between moving conditions and moving velocity are shown by various diagrams, and the optimum moving conditions are considered. The control methods of moving direction are discussed also. It has been confirmed that the above theoretical results agree well with experimental ones.
