This paper describes the effect of binder on properties of TiB
2 based cermets. The used binders are Ni
4B
3, Co-Cr-B alloy, WB, Mo, NbB, Tall, NiB, CrB, CoB, AlB
2, TaB
2, AlB
2-Ni·P, TaB
2-Ni·P, CrB
2-Ni·P, ZrB
2-Ni·P W-Ni·P, and Mo-Ni·P. The results are as follows:
1) Ni
4B
3 and NiB are good binders for TiB
2 based cermets. Binding phase of TiB
2-NiB sintered compact contains NiB, Ni
4B
3 and unknown phase. This Ni
4B
3 may combine with TiB
2 particle.
2) TiB
2-10%CrB
2-1%Ni·P sintered compact has the bending strength of 40-56kg/mm
2 and is almost free of pores. It is likely that Ni·P acts an important parts of good sintering.
3) TiB
2-10%CoB and TiB
2-5%Mo-1%Ni·P sintered compact has the bending strength of 50-60kg/mm
2.
