    The practical applications and trends in heat and/or wear resistant sintered parts and materials for automobiles are described in this paper.
    The typical example of heat and waer resistant sintered part is VALVE SEAT, wear resistant parts are CAMSHAFT and ROCKER ARM TIP for engines and heat resistant part is BUSH for exhaust emission control devices.

    The microstructure of Ti-50at%Ni vacuum-sintered compact was investigated in relation to the particle size of powders and the sintering temperature. The green compacts of [TiH2+Ni] powders ball-milled for various times were sintered in vacuum of 10m-3Pa at 1273-4473K for 3.6ks.
    It was found that the sintered compact obtained was almost free from micropores, when the particle size of TiHm2 in the milled powders was smaller than about 3 μm (particle size of Ni was 2 μm) and the sintering temperature was between 1423-4473K. The microstructure of compact, however, was not consisted only of TiNi phase, but Tim4Nim2Ox (x ?? 1) and TiNim3 phases were generally formed due to the increase in the oxygen content of compact with decreaing the particle size of TiH2.

    A study has been made on the effects of molybdenum content and carbon content on the transformation features of sintered Cr-Mo steels made from premixed powders. Metallic molybdenum, molybdenum carbide, or ferro-molybdenum powder was added to an atomized iron powder together with chromium carbide and graphite powders. The specimens having the chemical compositions of Fe-1%Cr-l%Mo-0.35%C and Fe-l%Cr-0.2%Mo-0.86%C were prepared, and the CCT diagrams, microstructures, and distribution of molybdenum of these specimens were compared with those of Fe-1%Cr-0.2%Mo-0.35%C specimens.
    The results obtained are as follows:
    (1) The microstructures of molybdenum segregated area in the specimens containing 1%Mo were similar to those of the specimens containing 0.2%Mo for each premixing method. On the other hand, the number of molybdenum segregated area per unit area was increased with increasing molybdenum content. The regions of bainite formation in CCT diagrams were, consequently extended to longer cooling time.
    (2) The molybdenum content of the segregated area in the specimens containing 0.86%C was markedly decreased by liquid phase formation. The diffused area of molybdenum was extended by increasing carbon content, regardless of the premixing method.

    A fractographic study has been made on the fatigue fracture behaviour of sintered carbon steels: The specimens containing 0.2, 0.4, and 0.8 mass% carbon were made from atomized iron powders of different particle size (+145, -145+250, and -250 mesh), and were tested by a reversed bending at 30 Hz.
    Fatigue fracture of sintered steels took place by coalescence of propagating main crack and micro cracks nucleated on the pore surface in front of the main crack, by means of cyclic and monotonic fracture mode. Hence, in fracture surface, both cyclic and monotonic fracture appearance were observed in single area of local fracture.
    The fractional area of cyclic fracture mode was estimated by the apparent porosity in projected fracture surface, PA. Therefore, PA gives a useful information on the fatigue fracture behaviour of sintered steels.

    The grindability of Ti(C, N)-Mo2C-Ni alloy was studied by using reginoid-bonded and nickel plated wheels with two kinds of diamond powders (single crystallike and polycrystallike) and single grit cutter. The TiC-Mo2C-Ni and WC-Co alloys were also tested for comparison. The binder content of those alloys was kept at 16.4 vol%.
    It was found that the grindability was excellent in the following order; WC-Co, TiC-Mo2C-Ni and Ti(C, N)-Mo2C-Ni alloys. It was also found that the wear of diamond in cases of nickel plated wheel and single grit cutter was most marked for Ti(C, N) base alloy; explaining the lowest grindability of the alloy. The wear of diamond particles seems to owe most to the mechanical one including microscopic fracture at the cutting edge and striation-formation on the flank surface of each particle.

    The sinterability, microstructure, mechanical properties, etc., of β(N)-W and β(N)-WC compacts (β(N); WC-TiC-TiN solid solution) were studied in detail as a function of sintering temperature (1823-2073K) and atmosphere (vacuum of 7Pa or N2 gas of 10kPa).
    It was found that the above properties of both compacts were sharply affected in particular by sintering atmospheres, and mechanical properties of β(N)-WC compacts would be most excellent, when sintered in nitrogen atmosphere.

    Fatigue tests were carried out under completely reversed plane .bending stress in order to clarify the influence of specimen size on fatigue strength of sintered irons.
    The fatigue strength of sintered irons decreased with increasing the thickness of specimens with the same width. It was found that the dimension of plane test pieces with 3-4 mm thickness and 10-15 mm width is very suitable for fatigue test.
