    Some properties such as sinterability, microstructure, mechanical properties, oxidation resistance, etc. were studied on Ti(C, N)-Mo2C, Ti(C, N)-WC and TiC-Mo2C compacts in relation to sintering temperature (1773-2073K) and atmosphere (vacuum or nitrogen). Carbonitride powders of TiC0.7N0.3 and TiC0.5 N0.5 were used as starting ones. It was suggested that TiC0.5N0.5-(10-15)%Mo2C compact shows the most excellent properties, when it is sintered in N2 of 20kPa at about 1973K. The results were in detail discussed.

    The effect of TaG or NbC addition on some mechanical properties of WC-β-Co and WC-β(N)-Co alloys (β, WC-TiC solid solution; variable β(N), WC-TiC-TiN s.s.) was investigated to make clear the difference between TaC and NbC as the additional carbides.
    It was found that the effect of TaC or NbC addition was nearly in the same way, so far as transverse-rupture strength, hardness and high temperature deformation were concerned. However, it was emphasized that the TaC addition was more effective than the NbC addition to improve the oxidation resistance of the alloys.

    The strength and adhesive character of coated cemented carbides by the PVD process were compared with those by the CVD process. It was found that the bending strength of coated carbides by the PVD was the same as the uncoated substrate, though the bending strength of those by the CVD was considerably lower than the uncoated substrate. The strength of the adhesion between the coated layer and the substrate was discussed, and the steel milling with the coated cemented carbides was also discussed.

    This work was carried out to clarify the influence of sintering temperature and time on fatigue strength of iron powder compacts with different particle sizes.
    The fatigue strength of iron compacts made from -100 mesh powder depended slightly on sintering temperature, but as sintering time increased at 1423K, it increased owing to the increase in the pore shape parameter and the spaces between pores.
    Comparing the fatigue strengths at the same density, it was observed that the coarse particle (-100+150 mesh) gave lower strength than the fine particle (-325 mesh). In both the compacts, as the sintering time increased, the fatigue strengths increased remarkably by the variation of the pore structures.

    Tadatoshi Honda: Statistical Fatigue Property of Sintered Irons.
    Statistical fatigue property of electrolytic iron powder compacts having different sintered density levels was investigated. The fatigue test was conducted under completely reversed plane bending stress and the fatigue lives of specimens were measured.
    The results obtained were as follows:
    (1) The variation coefficients for the sintered density of iron powder compacts were in the range of 0.20 to 0.34% and the values were scattered very little.
    (2) It was found that the scatter in.fatigue lives of electrolytic iron powder compacts with various sintered densities at a constant stress followed a log-normal distribution in the range of survivorship function of P=0.1 to P=0.9. It was possible therefore, to obtain the probability fatigue curves (P-S-N curves). The variation coefficients of these lives were about 2-6% and they were in good agreement with those of spheroidal graphite cast irons.

  • (2nd report) Mechanical Properties of Pre-mixed Adamite P/M Steel

    Mechanical properties of the pre-mixed adamite P/M steel have been investigated in comparison with the conventional adamite steel (1.7%C-1.2%Cr). High chromium iron powder was mixed with adamite steel powder containing 1.7%C-1.2%Cr and then hot-isostatically pressed to a full density. During hot isostatic pressing, high chromium iron powder containing 3.5%C-14%Cr changed into massive carbides whose size were almost the same as that of powder particles.
    Mechanical properties of the pre-mixed adamite P/M steel are as follows: The bend strength, tensile properties, fire cracking properties and fracture toughness of the pre-mixed adamite P/M steel with an optimum mixing ratio of 6% were found to be superior to those of conventional adamite steel. It should be noted that fracture toughness and fire cracking properties are improved by the addition of high chromium iron powder. These phenomena were interpreted by the branching of the cracks with the added powder.

    Oil-lubricated friction and wear properties of various copper-base sintered materials containing graphite were studied. Under dry condition, an addition of graphite is effective in reducing friction, transfer and wear. However, a combination of graphite with lubricating oil was not only ineffective, but in some cases brought about catastrophic wear. Under a severe condition, where the seizure may occur by an increase in temperature at the rubbing surface and failure of the oil film, a bronze-base composite with 10wt% graphite exhibited a somewhat preferable performance. The rubbed surfaces were not covered with a continuous graphite film after both dry and oil-lubricated tests.
