This research aimed to select terms for sensory evaluation on design by classifying the expression terms concerning the design. First, 1,078 terms concerning on design were collected. The representatives 76 terms were selected from each group by KJ method. The structure of sensory evaluation on design was examined by using a cluster analysis and a multidimensionalscaling. 12 basic clusters were obtained referring to the KJ method and to the results of factor analysis. They were composed of 12 clusters (the first cluster 'function beauty' to the 12th cluster 'conspicuousness'). 33 evaluation terms wereselected from the subordinate position cluster of each basic cluster. In the multidimensional scaling, Kruskal's stress was calculated. Three dimensions { dimension 1: a sense of intimacy and movement / high-class image, precise feeling, dimension 2: function / Kansei (creation and refinement), dimension 3 : material feeling and conspicuous (gay) / refinement (neat) } were be extracted. These coordinate values were plotted. It was finally confirmed that the subordinate position of each basiccluster had gathered in the dimensional space. In addition, the design of four kinds of articles (the bag, the putting clock, the vase and the desk lamp) were evaluated by the selected 33 evaluation terms. A multidimensional scaling (ALSCAL model) was carried out based on the obtained values. It was also confirmed that the meaning structure of evaluation terms by its analysis was corresponding to the result of the analysis based on a similarity matrix of the term. Moreover, the content expected to design of articles was distinguished by analyzing of INDSCAL model in multidimensional scaling. And it was confirmed that the selected terms were effective to evaluate of the design of articles.

  The structure of semantic space in which a man evaluates commercial goods was studied by using semantic differential method. About 650 terms (Japanese adjectives) concerning to evaluation of commercial goods were collected from published books and papers. From them, 64 terms were determined as representatives (concept terms) using KJ method. Then the factors in semantic space were analyzed by factor analysis with a scale composed of 12 pairs of adjectives. Two factors (KINOU and KANSEI) were confirmed and another one (MIJIKASA) was suggested in this experiments.
