On the purpose to study the direct effects on red blood cells (R. B. C.) by several kinds of plasma expanders, experimental works about hemolysis and shift of electrical change of R. B. C. were performed, and the result was summarised as the followings:
1) As the results of prolongation of intravascular remain which is a common character of plasma expanders, the influences towards vascular and blood cells must be considered.
2) PH of plasma expanders have acidic tendency in general. (pH of Dextran is 4.5-Haemaccel is 6.8)
3) As to Dextran (mainly high molecular weight Dextran) and 5% glucose, the higher percentage of hemolysis are shown, but Haemaccel, amino acid solution show lower percentages, such as blood plasma, that have the protective effect on R. B. C.
4) Haemaccel etc. don't make any increase of the electrophoretic velocity of R. B. C. to the anode, as well as blood plasma, but LMW-Dextran makes some differences, namely increase of electronegativity. and electrical change of R. B. C. shows the reversible shift by the kind of solvent.
5) LMW-Dextran shows the highest relative suspension value. Mechanism of intravascular antisludging effect of LMW-Dextran depends on the electric repulsion caused by increase of electronegativity of R. B. C. as well as high suspension stability of blood.
6) Correlation among electrical charge, hemolysis and suspension stability of blood were showed, and these are the keys for the important problems on peripheral microcirculation.
