    Fifteen mogrel dogs weighing between 9 and 15kg were anesthetized with 70% of nitrous oxide and 30% of oxygen and were ventilated mechanically. Following laparotomy the splenic artery was taped and incised tangentially to bleed 100ml of amount of blood into the abdominal cavity. The blood was immediately withdrawn by the Bentley suction tip dropping a small amount of heparinsaline solution into a 500ml blood collecting bottle which had been contained 10ml of 5% citrate sodium solution. The collected blood was transfused immediately through a polyester knitted micropore filter in six dogs as control group. In the other 9 dogs as the experimental group, the collected blood was transfered into a polyvinyl bag contained 400ml of 10% HES in 7% glucose solution. Then the bag was hung vertically and red cells were deposited gravitally within twenty minutes. The red cells were transfered into the other bag contained with 100ml of 0.7% saline solution and suspended. Then transfusion was done through a polyester knitted filter into the animals. In the both groups, the bleeding and transfusion were repeated 6 times every 30 minutes. Arterial blood pressure, heart rate, oxygen carrying capacity and pulmonary dead space rate remained almost unchanged in the observation period. Cardiac output and venous admixture rate increased significantly in the both groups. Red blood cell and platelet counts in peripheral blood decreased markedly in the both groups. Pulmonary arterial pressure (PAP) increased by 67% of control after the transfusion in the control group. In contrast, no change in PAP was noted in the experimental group. Leucocyte count in peripheral blood was decreased markedly in the experimental group while it decreased relatively less in the control group. No other significant difference between two groups was found in the other parameters. The above data suggested that the new intraoperative autotransfusion associated with erythrocyte macroaggregation by 10% HES in 7% glucose solution will be applied in clinical use avoiding unfavourable pulmonary hypertension.
