    To determine the influence of alteration of dietary protein upon metastatic incidence and local recurrence following resection of a simulated colon cancer in rats, the following experiments were carried out. Animals maintained on 18,20,25 and 50per cent casein diets (iso-caloric) subsequent to resection of a simulated colon cancer demonstrated a greater tendency to metastatic incidence and local recurrence of tumor. In contrast, animals maintained on 0,5 and 10 per cent casein diets (isocaloric) subsequent to tumor removal exhibited a lessened incidence of metastases and local recurrence. In other words, the more casein consumed, the greater the incidence and extent of metastases.
    Further studies disclosed that if animals maintained on a high protein diet prior to tumor removal were placed on a low casein ration following tumor removal, the local recurrence was not different from that of control animals receiving a low casein diet both before and after tumor removal. Likewise, animals initially receiving a low casein diet followed by a high casein diet after tumor removal exhibited a similar degree of local recurrence to the rats receiving a high casein diet throughout. Further, similar results were obtained with the experimental portal injection of tumor cells.
    Since the alrteation of dietary protein seems to affect the course of metastatic development, we must give this careful consideration.

    Since there seems to be a close relationship between thyroid gland and cold stress, this paper deals with the histological changes occurring in the thyroid gland of tumor-bearing rats during and after hypothermia.
    As a result, we could demonstrate that the function of the thyroid gland increased during lowered body temperature, but was depressed during rewarming.
    These findings suggest that such alteration of the host through cooling and rewarming provides a favourable soil to metastases.

    This repot is on a histopathological investigation of the temporal bones of six lepromatous leprosy patients of long standing. Exterial and radiological examination in leprosy revealed no clinical changes in any of the six patients, none of whow had had a past anamnesis of ear diseases which frequently bring temporal bone changes.
    1. Bone Changes
    There was no leprom, round cell infiltration or mycobacterium leprae. However, absorption of bone tissues, lacunal arrosion, dilatations of the Haversian canal, rarefying, halisteresis and osteoprosis were found.
    2. Vascular Changes
    In all cases, considerable changes in the vascular system of the temporal bone were found as follows: (a) Blood capillaries in the bone tissues were filled up with hyaline and fibrinoideal substances. (b) Distinction between the tunica interna, the tunica media and the tunica externa had become vague due to hypertrophic intima, an increase in endothelial cells, hyaline degeneration and an infiltration of small round cells into the vascular wall. (c) In 2 cases, granular acid fest bacilli dotted the muscular walls of the arterioles. (d) In addition, fibrinoid degeneration, especially of the tunica media and the tunica externa was externaly advanced. This latter phenomenon never been clearly described in the literature on the leprous vasculitis.
    Since in recent times, much emphasis has been laid on a correlation between this fibrinoid degeneration and allergic vasculitis, I would interpret this fibrinoid degeneration as a sign of leprous allergy. This histopathological investigation leads me to conclude that vascular changes in the temporal bone are very important causes of nonspecific bone changes in leprosy, although it is the vasomotor nerve disturbances which have been thought to be most significant cause.
    3. Peripheral nerve changes
    (a) The intistitial tissue around the bundle of nerve fibres had increased, especially in case No.5. (b) A slight disbundling of the medullated nerve and a partial demyelin phenomenon were observed. (c) Infiltration of the small round cells around some of the nerve bundles had occuered in two cases. (d) An increase in arterial intima around the nerve fibre bundles was slso observed. I interest these changes, especially the arterial changes, to be the fundamental causes of those in the nerve and the bone tissues.
    4. Other soft tissue changes
    The pathological findings in the bony Eustachian tube, tympanic menbrane, tympanic cavity, internal ear and cellular endosteum were as follows: (a) No one in the bony Eustachian tube and internal ear. (b) Hypertrophic endosteum, edema and round cell infiltration into the cellular endosteum were found in 4 cases. (c) Round cell infiltration and degenerated leprosy like bacilli in the tympanic mucous menbrane were found in only one case.

    Trials were made on the subcutaneous heterotransplantation of primary mammary cancers induced by oral administration of 7,12-dimethylbenz(α)anthracene in home-raised female rats of the Sprague-Dawley strain (SD/K) to the back of the young, progesterone-treated or cortisonized SD/T (a subline of the Sprague-Dawley strain, delivered from a dealer) female rats. The transplantations were successful only in the cortisonized rats. Further serial subcutaneous transplantations to the 2nd and 3rd generations of the cortisonized SD/T rats were carried out, and finally the 4th transplantation to the homegrown SD/K rats. The takes and growth rates became higher in the SD/K rats when cortisonization was no longer required for the takes. Since then 45 serial subcutaneous transplantations have been done during the past 3 years, and they are being continued.
    The histological appearance of the primary tumor was adenocarcinoma (Photo 2. ), which could still be seen in the 2nd and 3rd transplantations even though the spindle cell tumor pattern gradually increased (Photo 3. and 4. ). Adenocarcinomatous pictures could not be detected from the 4th transplantation (Photo 5. and 6. ). The histological appearance of the spindle cell tumor did not alter in the subsequent serial transplantations of the tumors to the SD/K rats (Photo 8. ).
    The transplantation rates in each generation were almost 100%, and the growth rate of the subcutaneous tumors and the survival time of the hosts were almost the same in each generation. The heterotransplantations of the tumor, however, were impossible in the sublines of the Sprague-Dawley strain (SD/T, SD/Y, and SD/S) and the Wistar and Donryu strains, all of which had been obtained through dealers.
    The trypsinized tumor cells were inoculated into the peritoneal cavity of the SD/K rats. Hemorrhagic ascites including tumor cells came out, which were applied to the serial intraperitoneal transplantations. Finally, an “ascitic tumor” was established. Subcutaneous inoculation of the ascitic tumor in turn yielded the spinde cell tumor. When a small piece of the subcutaneous tumor was intubated into the peritoneal cavity, many solid spindle cell tumor were produced in the mesenterial and retroperitoneal regions.
    The effects of the steroid hormones were observed on the growth rate of the subcutaneous transplanted tumor in the 12th transplantation generation. Cortisone inhibited their growth, while sex hormones did not influence it. The growth curve of the tumor in the SD/K rats, interpreted by the tumor size per days after transplantation, was more accelerated in the males than in the females. Hormonedependency has been reported in the great majority of DMBA-induced mammary cancers in rats, but, according to the present investigations, the transplantable tumor seems to be hormone-indipendent.
