Visual Thinking Strategies (VTS) were developed by Abigail Housen and Phillip Yanawine. VTS is a new concept in the art education field, and it is considered to be an effective tool not only to develop students' artistic ability but also cultivate their critical thinking ability and communication skills. At the VTS session, a facilitator asks students one question, "What's going on in this picture?" The facilitator paraphrases their statements and helps them continue the discussion. This paper discusses the possibility for the application of VTS in Japanese education and a case study to examine it.

In this study, we propose a system for detecting subject ellipsis. Subject ellipsis is known to make sentence comprehension difficult for non-native speakers. This system first extracts a noun which may be the subject and the predicate from an input sentence by using a dependency parser. Next, the system makes two types of sentences with the extracted noun and predicate: one with the particle ga and the other with the particle wo. Then it compares the frequency of each sentence in Web texts using a search engine to judge whether the extracted noun is the subject of the predicate. Based on the results, it can be determined whether the noun is the subject or the subject has been deleted.

Reading comprehension can be defined as the process of reconstructing a story from reading material. With this definition in mind, we conducted post-reading retelling activity in pairs in one Japanese reading class, in which each pair of learners retold the story to each other. As a result of analyzing their dialogic interactions, we observed some patterns in learners' reconstruction. Their interactions are considered to be influenced by various kinds of factors, such as learners' Japanese proficiency level, their beliefs about reading comprehension, and the level, structure and content of reading material.

It is possible to predict learning difficulties for four verbs written with the Chinese character 通 - tooru, toosu, tsuujiru and kayou - since they are in mutually synonymous relations and at the same time polysemous verbs. In this paper, we perform a sentence production survey and a questionnaire in order to clarify the learners' usage and understanding of the verbs. As a result, a small number of bias usages is produced , and only wo tooshite and wo tsuujite are highly frequent. The transitive and intransitive verbs toosu and tooru are often confused. The verb kayou is mostly produced in its prototype usage and has high percentage of correct answers.

The aim of this research is to clarify 1) effects of the instruction of special morae with visual aids and 2) whether word-level utterances are different from sentence-level for foreign learners of Japanese, who have different learning styles. The instructions are conducted to 13 pre-intermediate level students and their utterances are evaluated. As a result of ANOVA, significant effects are found between scores of pre- and post-examinations on both word and sentence levels. Significant effects also show different learning styles on word levels while they do not on sentence levels.

This study presented the author's efforts for revitalizing Japanese language education through incorporating the progressivist approach. It focused on describing/reporting various aspects of a cultural history class for advanced learners of Japanese in an American university. Some features of the progressive education are being reexamined and gaining attention in order to renew American education in the 21^<st> century. This study showed how American university students can benefit from studying the ancient-premodern eras of Japanese culture through incorporating the strengths of the progressivist curriculum.

This paper reports on academic writing classes for university students. In some reports which were submitted as assignments, expected target learning items were unused and unlinked. After the first submission I checked the drafts against a list of items. Students were then given a detailed evaluation list of learning items to raise their consciousness and were asked to rewrite their reports referring to it and to highlight the items. As a result, in their final drafts the learning items were almost all used and the items were also linked.

Paraphrasing is one of the important skills used in academic writing. Past textbooks of Japanese academic writing for international students apply the focus to only the paraphrasing from one word to another, so we are developing a workbook that consists of various exercises. In this study, we analyzed learners' evaluation in order to confirm the practicability of the workbook. Used tentatively, learners gave positive feedback on the whole and the necessities of paraphrasing other than one word were recognized by them.

This paper is a report on an experimental study of adopting brief practice of intonation in Business Japanese class for foreign graduate and research students. In each class, learners were directed to listen to core expressions that often used in business setting and describe the varying intonation levels of the sentences with overt hand motions and/or draw them on paper or a blackboard and discuss them with peers. Results were that the learners produced questions and comments that indicated successful meta-cognitive learning in control of intonation.

This paper presents how students sort out, refine thoughts through doing a task of brief speech. The setting for the task is an interview like that of entrance examination at which students are requested to state reason for applying. 6 sessions are taken to deliver a speech, as students go through a repeated cycle of "prepare, deliver, review and improve a speech" during the sessions. From reviewing changes in their speech content over the sessions, it is implied that topic selection, structure, highlighting particular topics amongst those selected and specification are main focus areas to improve speech.

In this study, two different tasks were conducted on 120 Japanese native speakers in order to collect data on the usage conditions of demonstratives in opinion texts. One task is fill-in-the-blank questions, and the other task is grammar tests of choosing between five-choices of 'φ(no pronouns), Kono, Sono, Konoyouna, Sonoyouna'. The result shows several factors which would give priority to the usage of 'Konoyouna' over 'Sonoyouna'. It also shows that there is a difference in the usage rate of demonstratives due to the types of demonstratives and the differences in conditions.

This paper presents an activity for conversation practice, "Topic J1," for early elementary-level Japanese language learners. The purpose of the activity is to cultivate their skills in developing the topic on the basis of interaction. The process includes the followings: (1) receiving a topic from a teacher, (2) developing the practice of asking each other questions on the topic, (3) having a conversation based on topic-related experiences in pairs, (4) presenting the conversation of each pair in the class, and (5) receiving the teacher's feedback. Repeated participation in this activity has been found to help the learners acquire skills in developing the topic and participating in interactive conversations.

A series of classroom activities was carried out with the aim of improving the students' listening comprehension. The activities included the utilization of learning resources, a top-down approach to listening, and a bottom-up approach to listening as well as activities to expand their world knowledge. The large variation in students' listening comprehension abilities at the beginning of the term was significantly narrowed by the end of the term. Although other factors cannot be excluded, it is significant that the intended outcomes were achieved after the problem was identified in advance and addressed by continuous practice throughout the term.

We are currently making improvements in a self-learning textbook of synonym analysis strategy. The textbook is composed of explanations and practice for the strategy. In order to enrich the strategy of analyzing grammatical example sentences, we took up "imaging strategy," - verbalizing the image recalled from the sentences - and examined whether its training is effective in a Japanese teacher training program. The result showed that the trainees explained the content of sentences superficially and peripheral events which has not been shown to the sentences. Thus, in order to obtain information efficiently from examples for synonym analysis, detailed checking and reanalysis of the verbalized image is needed.

Emphasizing on language learning strategies, student portfolio, peer learning and self-assessment were introduced into the intermediate conversation class. The results of a survey conducted after the completion of the course show that the language learning strategies are effective on learners. In late fiscal 2011 conversation class, the learner became actively involved in the portfolio through positive feedback by the teacher. This paper suggests the effectiveness of student portfolios and importance of assessment of theportfolio.

This is a report from experimental classes of a new method of teaching verbs. In the classes, students were asked what kinds of words co-occured with the verbs in order to categorize them. The method is expected to promote understanding of the meanings and the appropriate co-occurrences of the verbs and was proven effective through extensive research. The students participated very actively in the classes and gave positive feedback on them. Through these experiments, the method showed to have potential. The students also gave suggestions about how to successfully execute the method in actual classes.

We are offering a course of "Teaching Japanese as a second language" for Japanese freshmen and sophomores. Characteristics of the course are as follows: 1) This is offered as a course in Liberal Arts and the students' majors are in various fields. 2) After only 10 sessions of preparation, the students have the experience of practical teaching of elementary Japanese to international students. 3) The students analyze the items and make teaching plans by themselves using only teachers' advice, without depending on any books. This paper reports the outline of the course and discusses the change occurring in the consciousness and attitude of the students durine the course over 5 separate terms, based on student interviews.

This paper reports a development of e-leaning of Economics and Management for self-learning. The aim of the material is to build a strong vocabulary for graduate school students from abroad who come to Japan. Lists of words in frequency order were based on the books which a Economics and Management professor provided, and the content consists of 500 Nouns, 500 Suru-verbs, and 300 Katakana words and there are reading comprehension and usage questions. As result of a trial run, evaluation was that there was a good response in the point of contents.

In the intermediate and advanced Japanese classes with comprehensive textbooks, it was practiced as follows: telling the type of accent by "abc" that focuses on the difference in the pitch of the word's (or phrase's) beginning and pronouncing while listening to a drum beat, for the purpose of being conscious of the accent nucleus. By carrying out a couple of simple listening tests about three-rnora words, a significant difference was observed before and after practicing.

A way to apply popular tablet-type device (iPad) to Japanese language education was inquired and implemented in real classes. The effectiveness of the use of the device was particularly obvious when the students in the basic class studied from its flashcard function showing pictures and letters. The time for preparation was reduced and the students appreciated efficient learning. This article reports concrete usage of the tablet-type device, its merits for instructors and students, and issues for future development.

This research was aimed to compare the reading ability and the listening ability of the kanji characters, in the Intermediate level Japanese language students of Chinese, who learn Japanese language in China. Author carried out a kanji vocabulary test and a listening based Hiragana test of 76 Intermediate level Japanese language students of Chinese. The result shows that there is no direct connection with the reading ability and the listening ability of the kanji characters, and also there was a tendency in making different errors in both tests.

Yamagata dialect is used widely in nursing facilities in Yamagata. It not easy for non-native Japanese nursing staff or non-native learners of nursing to understand the language used in nursing facilities, if they have no knowledge of Yamagata dialect. This paper reports on an advanced-level Japanese oral communication class that used a television conference system connecting two campuses. Halfway through this class, a questionnaire survey concerning the use of a television conference system was conducted. The results revealed that 1) participants felt either uneasy or interested during their first experience with television conference systems; 2) while many participants mentioned convenience as an advantage of this system, the delay in audio transmission and lack of vividness were mentioned as the drawbacks of this system; and 3) some participants adjusted the pitch of their voice and size of letters written on the whiteboard for the benefit of participants at the other campus.

First-time conversations are important in establishing relationships between speakers, but foreign students find it difficult in deciding on suitable topics and proper ways to develop conversation with native Japanese whom they meet for the first time. Most conversational teaching materials only cover basic greetings and self-introduction. This study aims at the development of teaching materials focusing on the establishment of relationship in first-time conversations and an analysis of data collected from first-time conversations have revealed the process in which conversational topics develop after the exchange of basic information.

The author interviewed Japanese language teachers assuming their own beliefs give rise to differences in teaching management. The result shows that it is unrelated to the difference in learning style, whether in group or private lessons. Taking this point into account, the second interviews focus how Japanese language teachers view their own aptitude. The results are considered in the context of how "the ideal Japanese language teacher" develops the art of Japanese language teaching.

We conducted an interview survey in order to study how learners in a 6 week program for university students would perceive cultures. The result shows their perceptions involve not only the formation and modification of images of Japan but also the reinterpretation of their own culture and the awareness of themselves. Through the awareness of themselves the learners perceive their cultural experiences as important cross-cultural experiences. We have found that it is important for this kind of program to present learners with the perspectives for understanding cultures and the opportunities for them to share their awareness with others with different cultural backgrounds.

This paper reports on "chat sessions" with Japanese students in Japanese beginners' classes. We introduced these sessions to give opportunities of practical use of Japanese to the learners, who have few occasion of using Japanese. The learners chatted about topics given by the teachers 30 minutes at the end of classes every week. As a result, we found that they got motivated to study more and to speak Japanese outside the class room.

All the teachers hope to carry out "a good lesson". Then, what lesson is "a good lesson"? In this presentation, the questionnaire about "a good lesson" is carried out for the students of Thailand, and the result is analyzed from the contrastive view-point, compared with the data for Chinese students.The result shows that the students of Thailand might have a different sense of values and educational philosophy from Chinese Students, by touching the different classroom culture, or their own beliefs.

This presentation reports on a survey of the actual use of the Reading Tutorial Web Dictionary. The web dictionary gives access to multilingual Japanese language dictionaries and mini-dictionaries for foreign care worker candidates. We surveyed access frequency by country and by dictionary type. We also checked the level of all words contained in input sentences and the cover ratio of each dictionary to verify the practical effectiveness of the Reading Tutorial Web Dictionary.

This study shows how the "San bun setsu hou" is effective for making speech of Beginners level. They sometimes are facing difficulties in doing speech because they cannot choose what subject is necessary to their speech and are not sure how they put their speeches in order. We introduce "San bun setsu hou" to them and we found out it was very effective way for them to make speech, especially for the students who were not good learners. By introducing this method, they can make their speech much easier, focused, arranged and clearer.

Students need the ability to form agreements with others when they go out into society so it's important to practice. We adopted the format of group discussion used in many employment examinations of drawing group conclusions. Integrating and organizing techniques to bring together each participant's opinions are necessary. As a result of practice, students were able to reach a conclusion within a limited time. Group discussion cultivated logical thinking, required to make a personal opinion and achieve consensus. I would like to propose the adoption of such practice.

Kanji is difficult to learn for foreigners who come from countries that do not use Kanji. This investigation was conducted with students who study Japanese to understand effective ways of learning Kanji. Results of the surveys indicate that students need more information about "when, where and in what situations kanji is used", and "many sentences with examples of Kanji being used". Kanji classes are not just for learning Kanji, students also learn vocabulary. Students should be given more information about ways of learning so they can choose how to study effectively. More time should be spent on Kanji classes.

This paper investigates how appropriately advanced Japanese learners behave verbally and non-verbally when they interact with Japanese native students. Data was collected from the interviews of Japanese students by advanced learners. The results show that many learners have difficulties in maintaining or developing the conversation smoothly and that the conversation may fall into silence repeatedly. These are caused by the failure to convey appropriately the acknowledge signals indicating the learners' reception of the message from the interviewees. Advanced learners need to be made aware of the importance of listeners' role in conversation and the teaching of conversation skills to them needs to reflect this.

This presentation discusses the development and assessment of a pronunciation training using an automatic speech recognition system. The system uses an automatic speech recognition engine called "Ami Voice" developed by Advanced Media, Inc. The program is capable of diagnosing both segmentals and prosodies and providing easy-to understand visual feedback.

As an activity to enhance the reading comprehension for Japanese intermediate learners, the effects of making and presenting a resume in a poster with partner(s) in a group, were investigated (study 1). There was no effect of an activity on the reading comprehension. Furthermore, in study-2, after an activity (similar with study-1), a conversation about the presentation and re-making a resume, were performed. As a result, an improvement in comprehension was shown. Both study-1 and -2 show inaccurate self-evaluation of comprehension, therefore for enhancing the reading comprehension, explicit feedbacks are necessary.
