From May to December, in 1964, the author has studied the Japanese serow,
Capricornis crispus crispus (TEMMINCK) having been kept in captivity for nine years in Omachi Alpine Museum, Nagano Pref.. This specimen was reared in a cage (933m
2) which is covered by secondary forest trees (
Quercus acutissima, Pinus densiflora, Prunes verecunda etc.) . During resting, the serow prefers a wide open and comparatively dry area. Rest by sitting down and by standing is performed at nearly regular times through every month, although this behaviour is influenced by the weather.Downsitting hours are twice the standing ones. Rumination hours in sitting down increase from spring to summer or autumn. It seems due to the character of food given. Standing rumination is also done, but for a very short time. Sleeping hours indicate the lowest during September, October, and November. It seems to be related to the mating season in natural habitats. Movement distance and hours decrease from spring to summer and increase from autumn to winter. In October, November, and December, the running movement was observed. It also seems to be connected with the mating season. Urination place is inconstant, the defecation place is however constant. Which can not be seen through.
