This research aims at examining and defining significant characteristics of kindergarten teachers' decision making in responce to specific nursery situations, and at investigating the relation between their decision making and their career as a teacher. This reseach employed a "case method with visual scene simulation," a method which provides teachers with various nursery scenes by explanatory illustration and requires them to make and record in their own words decisions most suited for each situation. Results clarified three points : 1) The teachers' decision making showed diversity for each situation ; 2) Teachers with shorter careers are more likely to make stereotyped decisions ; 3) More experienced teachers often make flexible decisions in proper response to each child and to each situation.

This study investigated the effects of paragraphing text on reader comprehension. In the experiment, three different types of paragraphing for the same text were compared : correctly paragraphed text, misparagraphed text, and unparagraphed text. Subjects' recall of text content indicated that the correctly paragraphed text was best, and unparagraphed text was worst, both on total recall and on main-idea recall. The results suggest that correct paragraphing facilitated readers' employment of such reading strategies as : 1) organizing ideas of each paragraph and identifying its main point ; 2) understanding text structure based on the relation among paragraphs. These strategies were considered to have led readers to better comprehension of the text.

Many computers have now been placed in schools, and new information technology like the Internet will soon be introduced. Collaborative learning through computer networks and use of the Internet for education have begun to attract many educators' notice. The purpose of this study was to develop a "distributed collaborative learning environment", which realizes collaborative real-time learning on a computer network. To accomplish this study, we developed a technical infrastructure termed "Computer Supported Collaborative Learning (CSCL)". In the system, a student can utilize two work spaces which consist of a personal work space and a collaborative work space. For group learning, students solved problems through discussion supported by an author designed system comprised of two functions : diagnosis and advisement of students' answers, and coordination of their discussion.

A new method was proposed for preparing a textbook based on learning procedures. This method is used to prepare intelligible textbooks without needing to rely greatly on the skill of the preparer. The outline of this method is as follows. First, some example procedures are explained. Next, technical terms are drawn from the explanations. Then, conceptual knowledge is constructed and explained based on the technical terms. Two textbooks were prepared on the computer language, Objective-C, one using this method and the other based on the skill of the preparer. The intelligibility of these two textbooks was evaluated experimentally. The former was shown to be three times more intelligible than the latter.
