The history, symptomatology, psychopathology, and treatment of schizophrenia are reviewed, and the Schneiderian first rank symptoms, ego-disorder, generative disorder, negative and positive symptoms, cognitive dysfunction, stress-vulnerability model and organodynamism are noted in paticular.
Then, the English-language literature concerning the music therapy of schizophrenia is reviewed, and a hypothesis to explain the mechanism of the efficacy of music therapy of schizophrenia based on the cases the writer treated is discussed.
In addition, it is argued that quantitative studies and studies on the indications for music therapy, how to choose the music therapy techniques, and on construction of a psychopathologic model of music therapy are needed.
