Investigated is noise characteristics of vacuum-deposited Co-Cr tapes with regard to the incident angle of vapor beam onto substrates. For the Co-Cr film, medium
C, deposited with the incident angle varying from 70° to 20°, modulation noise level is high and increases as the carrier frequency increases. While for medium
A deposited with the incident angle varying from 20° to −20° and medium
B with the angle from 55° to 20°, modulation noise level is relatively low and remains almost constant with increasing carrier frequency. Bitter patterns suggest that modulation noise of medium
C originates from large longitudinal magnetization component resulting in zig-zag transitions. Modulation noise level of media
B and
C depends on head scanning direction, being the smaller in the normal scanning than in the reverse scanning. Recording process of medium
A corresponds to that in the reverse scanning of media
B and
C. It follows that modulation noise level of medium
B in the normal scanning is lower than that of perpendicularly deposited medium
A.
