977 male Japanese of the eastern North-East district (Iwate, Awomori and Miyagi) of Japan were studied anthropologically.
Their stature is 160.0 cm high, head length 189.3 mm, head breadth 152.5 mm, auricular height 125.5 mm, cephalic index 80.56, bizygomatic breadth 142.4 mm, face height from supraorbitale to gnathion 134.5 mm, face index 94.4, bigonial width 109.0 mm, interorbital width 33.4 mm.
In 1925 Matsumura has reported about the higher stature (163.80 cm) and broader head (cephalic index—81.06) of the Rikuchu district (Iwate)in comparison with the surrounding regions. After him have the more southern district lowe rstature and narrower head, the more northern also lower stature but with similar cephalic index as compared with the Rikuchu. After 30 years the author can observe also the same inclination. although it is not so distinctly as before. The inhabitants of Iwate (old name Rikuchu) district have a little higher stature, longer and broader head compared with those of the surrounding regions, especially with those of southern, which characteristics are matched with the broader and higher face. These characteristics are far from the northern Hokkaido Ainu.
In this eastern North-East districht of Japan are the inhabitants of sea side tall and mesocephalic, while those of west mountaneous region a little lower and more brachycephalic, which local difference has been observed already by Prof. Nii.
