Multiple single-unit recordings with multichannel electrodes are becoming the standard method for elucidating the mechanism driving information processing in the brain. In this paper, we provide an overview of the history of electrophysiological recording techniques, beginning from single-unit recordings with single-channel electrodes to multiple single-unit recordings with multi-channel electrodes. We also introduce our current research based on a multiple single-unit recording technique applied to visual cortical areas. The current status and future challenges for multiple single-unit recording techniques are also considered.
