    Methods for suppression and control of the axisymmetric vertical positional instability are described on the basis of conceptural design studies with the International Tokamak Reactor (INTOR). The shell effect is well known to be useful for suppression of the fast instability. Here shell structures are presented and their usefulness is assessed. Included in the assessments are required modellings of the plasma current for determination of mutual inductances between the plasma and the inductive components around it. Three kinds of models are described and their features are compared to the shell effect. Two kinds of simplified reactor structures are described and studied by comparing them with some control characteristics of the slow instability by a pair of control coils. Their structures are selected so as to result in different shell effects between them, and are consequently found to produce different capacities of power supply, too.

    The problem of the optimal external source distribution for maximum power in subcritical uniform slab reactors with a maximum flux constraint is analyzed. The complete analytical solution of the problem is obtained, within the one group diffusion approximation, using optimal control theory. Some numerical examples are included to illustrate the behavior of the optimal solution.

    In-reactor experiments were performed in Nuclear Safety Research Reactor of Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute to study the failure behavior of stainless steel clad fuel rods under a simulated reactivity initiated accident (RIA) condition. A single test fuel rod with stainless steel cladding was contained in a capsule filled with water at room temperature and atmospheric pressure and irradiated by pulsing power simulating an RIA. It was revealed through the experiments that the failure mechanism of the stainless steel clad fuel rod was cladding melting, which was different from oxygen-induced embrittlement observed in the Zircaloy clad fuel rod in the same test condition, and the failure threshold energy was determined to be about 240 cal/g•UO2 (1, 000 kJ/kg•UO2), which was about 20 cal/g •UO2 (85 kJ/kg•UO2) lower than that of the Zircaloy clad fuel rod. It was also found that the mechanical energy was generated by explosive vaporization of coolant due to molten fuel-coolant interaction as a consequence of the fuel rod failure accompanying fuel pellet fragmentation at an energy deposition of nearly 380 cal/g•UO2 (1, 600 kJ/kg• UO2) or more.
  • Feasibility of Simplified Chemical Processing of Water-Soluble Copper Phthalocyanine

    A new target material has been proposed for nuclear recoil enrichment of 64Cu. This radionuclide was hitherto produced by tedious chemical processing using concentrated sulfuric acid solution of neutron irradiated copper phthalocyanine. Simplified chemical processes using a water-soluble copper phthalocyanine derivative, octacarboxyphthalocyanato copper (II), have been adopted in this work. Two methods of separation involving solvent extraction and precipitation have been tested. Higher specific activity of 64Cu has been obtained for the extraction method than for the precipitation method. Feasibility of the extraction method in 64Cu enrichment is discussed.

    The UO2+2 fluorescence spectra were measured for solutions whose conditions, except for coexisting species, corresponded to high level waste (HLW) solutions in the nuclear fuel reprocessing plants. From these spectra it was ascertained that the U concentration can be determined in the range of 2200 g/m3 with an accuracy of 1 g/m3 at 3040°C. The UO2+2 fluorescence was influenced significantly by the temperature. The apparant activation energy of the temperature effect was 35.7 kJ/mol. The fluorescence intensities increased with nitric acid concentration in the range of 0.754.5 mol/dm3. The temperature effect was considered to be caused by a chemical process concerned with water molecules.

    The three-dimensional spherical leaching model was developed on the basis of the experimental results for nuclear waste glass. Emphasis was placed on proposing a model for the growth of surface layers and for an immobilized reaction inside these layers. The diffusion equations derived from the modeling were solved numerically using the Crank-Nicholson implicit method and the resulting equations were implemented in a computer code named LEACH-2. To determine the location of the moving boundary, which was one of the most important parameters in this model, two simple examples were presented. One was the location of the moving boundary under the reaction controlled mechanisms and the other was that under the diffusion controlled mechanisms. The computed results using the latter example were in good agreement with the previous experimental data.

    In this study, it is proposed to use exchange reaction between hydrogen isotopes in gas phase and those in hydrophilic substrate of the precious metal catalyst for the purpose of recovering tritium as molecular form from the inert gas such as the atomosphere in the secondary containment, where no oxygen is expected. The values of the equilibrium constant and reaction rate constant for this reaction are obtained for tritium-protium system and deuterium-protium system experimentally. It is also certified that the tritium concentration at the outlet of Pt-alumina catalyst bed is evaluated in good agreement with experimental values. Behaviors of the tritium cleanup system for the secondary containment applying this reaction are compared for various operational conditions, and it is concluded that isotope exchange reaction using hydrophilic catalyst bed is applicable for the secondary contaiment. The bed of the precious metal catalyst can also be active as oxidation catalyst even when air in the tertiary containment is introduced by some accidents.

    When a primary recirculation line of BWR is ruptured, a primary recirculation pump may be subjected to very high velocity two-phase flow and its speed may be accelerated by this flow. It is important for safety evaluation to estimate the pump behavior during blowdown. There are two problems involved in analyzing this behavior. One problem concerns the pump characteristics under two-phase flow. The other involves the two-phase conditions at the pump inlet. If the rupture occurs at a suction side of the pump, choking is considered to occur at a broken jet pump nozzle. Then, a void fraction becomes larger downstream from the jet pump nozzle and volumetric flow through the pump will be very high. However, there is little experimental data available on two-phase flow downstream from a choking plane. Blowdown tests were performed using a simulated broken recirculation line and measured data were analyzed by TRAC-P1A. Analytical results agreed with measured data.
