The purpose of this study is to estimate the significance informations as to the absence from work as an indicator of mental health of the workers. The study was made in a spinning industry. The results are as follows. Cases of mental disorders left out of the mental health supervision could be found by the use of absence informations. The method of finding out the cases for treatment by a combination of such informations and an interview was found more useful than that using other informations. And effective screening was possible by the use of not only days of absence in a year but also the pattern of absence and of being late at work or early leaving. But, all of the workers selected by this screening were not recognized as mentally disordered. A great number of mentaly disordered cases were most likely included in them. Consequently, the use of the absence informations should be taken as a condensing process of mentally problematic workers who are to sit for the next detailed examinations.
