This paper describes the revision of JICST Unified Classification Table on Science & Technology which has been used for classifying items of JICST Files on Science and Technology and the JICST File of On-going Research Themes for Governmental and Public Research institutes since 1975, and partial revision of section classification for whole series of Current Bibliography on Science & Technology. This revised edition will be used starting in 1981, but the former classification table is still effective for files up to 1980.

This paper describes how 1978 edition of JICST Thesaurus is revised and became 1981 edition of the Thesaurus by showing revision rules and the examples. The revision is mainly concerned with 1) revision of terms and 2) revision of relations among terms. As to terms deletion, addition, modification, relocation from descriptors to non-descriptors and the reversal and rearrangement of complex - words and similar words are carried out. Then the revision of relations among terms, that is, level, preference, related, is done. It mentions the counter measures againt Furigana of the same form as EBCDIC, which causes noise in retrieval. It explains the content of the revision itself as the whole, but does not mention the matters such as origin of revision criteria and their problems, evaluation of revision and so on.

On the occasion of publishing 1981 edition of JICST Thesaurus on Science & Technology this paper describes the term organization of organic compounds included in this Thesaurus, the indexing method of the organic compounds and the retrieval function by link which has been initiated. Originally there is no indexing method other than combining descriptors in order to represent millions of organic compounds by use of a thesaurus. The huge amount of the combination rules makes indexing and retrieving considerably difficult. This burden is inevitable to organic compounds so that not only JICST Thesaurus but also other thesauri or methods such as free terms cause the same trouble for their indexing and retrieving. JICST method of indexing organic compounds is explained along with a lot of examples.

This paper describes the substantial revision of terms in the fields of medicine, agriculture and biology of the JICST Thesaurus 1981 edition. This revision aims at covering all of the areas in life science including biochemistry, pharmacy and agricultural chemistry. Subject categories have increased to 47, but formerly the number was 19. The total number of descriptors, formerly 4970, is 9362, Nondescriptors have increased to 1836, but formerly 1395. The way of collecting and arranging terms, the scope of each subject category, major revising points derived from 1978 edition of the Thesaurus, and levels of terms (BT and NT) and relation of terms (RT) are explained. Also it mentions the matters to be attended to in indexing and retrieving along with some examples.

This paper describes fundamental functions of vocabulary management system which is a system compiling terms by computers, and the system improvements on 1981 edition of JICST Thesaurus on Science & Technology and its operational results with some real data. Also it discusses some problems derived from the above operation and future progress. The functions of vocabulary management system consist of checking and verifying headings and their attributes in the Thesaurus structure, checking and verifying the basic relations among headings (most adjacent relations) and inconsitency checking and verifying level structure of the Thesaurus. In each stage of checking and venfying general-use chinese characters compilation system as well as display editing system are introduced in order to raise the efficiency of thesaurus maintenance.

At first two types of thesaurus based on the definition of ISO 2788 are explained, and in relation to them the desirable use of thesauri at the on-line age is considered. Then it discusses direction of vocabulary control system in on-line information retrieval and the necessity of multi-languages thesauri. Also it describes objectives, definition and scope of associate descriptors which will be started for their input in JICST file in 1981, and future problems on Thesaurus maintenance.
