In lieu of JICST's now experimental on-line information retrieval system, JOIS-I, which started servicing from April 1976, JOIS-II, to be operational in February 1981, is outlined with transitional program. The JOIS-II features: 1) a full-fledged IR system home-made servicing commercially, 2) easy access and rich retrieval functions, 3) output in Japanese script from Japanese-language databases, 4) on-line query registration and automatic SDI function, 5) on-line acceptance of photocopying requests, and 6) in addition to regular IR databases, IR-supporting files (for thesaurus, chemical compound dictionary) and catalog of serials and reports held by the JICST.

The PATOLIS system featuring output in Japanese script of Japanese patent information, is explained and its practical use from the beginning to the present is reported. Though the PATOLIS was initially limited to Japanese patent information, it is widely utilized, in terms of number of terminals set up, number of requests received, and performances. The system will be expanded in near future to cover U. S. patents and to become easily accessible on common commuication line, etc.

Data processing performed by the World Data Center for Cosmic Rays, installed at the Institute of Physical and Chemical Research (IPCR) is reported. The Center was set up as a member of the World Data Center for Solar and Terrestrial Physics and performs assigned services. Ther are several C-level World Data Centers in Japan, and the DC for Cosmic Rays, IPCR, is described in detail, in the context of cosmic ray research itself. As to the future of the Center, IPCR, personal opinions and expectations are made. Thus a glimpse on a century of International Cooperative Observation and a quarter century of world data center operations are made from cosmic ray research side.
