“Studies on Advanced Use of Chemical Compounds Information by Network Sharing” to which governmental fund for coordinating the promotion of science and technology is alloted started in 1981, and have been under way in coorperation with ministries, agencies or organizations involved in them for the purpose of developing the practical system by 1985. The project is mainly classified into two subjects ; development of applied software to realize shared network, and development of comprehensive chemical compounds data base system. A series of the progress reports are mostly concerned with the latter subject, and introduce the outline of the fundamental design which was made in 1981. This paper describes the total system of comprehensive chemical compounds data base, data base system of chemical compounds dictionary and service system by network sharing. Chemical Abstracts sees its 75th anniversary come round this year since it was founded in 1907 having overcome numerous difficulties. At the beginning it was small size abstract journal which included about 400 titles, but it has grown so large keeping pace with tremendous increase of literature volume after the World War II. In the late 1950s CAS started to mechanize the information processing and to realize diversification of services. Among the services Chemical Registry System is considered to be the largest in the developmental size. The revenue of printed CA is expected to decrease so that its ratio to the total CAS revenues is likely to decline. CAS is going to enlarge on-line information delivery service as the most important policy from now on.
