JAPICDOC, a system which deals with domestic literature in medical and pharmaceutical fields, was originally started as a card system twelve years ago. In 1979 it was on-lined by means of alphanumeric, and then was altered to Kanji system in 1983. It monitors 202 titles of domestic journals and cites about 10,000 articles from them annually. The search tags are free word, name of pharmaceutical, company name, dosage form, indication, efficacy classification code, disease classification code, classification code representing thema of article, adverse effect classification code and so on. Block copy of the printed volumes, on-line magnetic tapes and index printout are available through the Kanji system in which some aspects such as type of characters have been fully considered. Enlargement of search tags, the linkage with the external systems and international need of Japanese literature in these fields are subjects to be solved in future.
