This is a lecture at the 15th anniversary of JICST Kyushu Branch. In Medical Science there are many fields of study classified by the difference of approach. Each field is related closely, and to make a study of a field the knowledges of other fields are also needed. Such characteristic of medical study has been the problem on research of medical literature. Online information retrieval such as JOIS has changed the retrieval much easier, however some difficulties by the characteristic still remain. Importance of training specialist in information retrieval, construction of specialized databases, making databases easier to use and so on are suggested.

This paper describes the information management system at National Museum of Ethnology, Osaka, Japan. This museum is a kind of research center for cultural anthropology, and has many computer systems such as IBM 3090, VAX11/780, Fujitu M340R, etc. With these computers, distributed multimedia databases are constructed in which not only bibliographic data but also artifact image, slide image, book page image, etc. are stored. The number of data is now about 1.3 million items. These data can be retrieved and displayed on the multimedia workstation which has several displays.

Relations between factual database systems and materials designs are considered from a view point of end-users to be useful in the scientific fields lacking in systematical principles. It is described to be necessary that the factual database systems for assistng materials designs have some peculiarities, and these systems are called by name of CAFI (Computer Assisted Forming Ideas). A factual database for design of fine-particle catalysts is described as an example of CAFI in its design architecture and its data structure. Some new characteristics of fine-particle catalysts are obtained by data analysis in the factual database. Further raquirements of the factual database systems are discussed from a view point of end-users for assistng materials designs.

This paper provides database-type CAI : OSCAR. In order to construct OSCAR authors have applied TRIAS which is a personal database management system. The main feature of OSCAR is that the knowledge of a student is represented by database, and that the database expands with student’s knowledge. This paper focuses mainly on the construction and an example of the personal database-type CAI : OSCAR.

The CD-ROM system can be used independently or as a compliment to an on-line data system. It has many of the same features as an on-line system. Nippan developed the CD-NOCS system as a reinforcement or substitute for the on-line systems of the customers (bookstores). CD-NOCS is not necessarily designed just for bookstores, it is also applicable to libraries and companies. Authors would also like to emphasize that it is important to understand the development and background of the CD-NOCS system, as well as its operations.

CD-ROM is remarked as an epoch-making medium because of its advantages such as large capacity, compact size, mass reproducibility, read only memory and cost performance ratio. Some of big dictionaries and online databases have been converted to CD-ROM versions so far, however, information of publication or machine parts are converted recently. Moreover various CD-ROM-aided products such as support system for R&D, decision making and so on are being turned out. Still there remain many problems on sophisticated utilization of CD-ROM and distributive machinery of information. Author reviews this mini-series and describes the prospects of development of CD-ROM.

The authors describe the outline and the construction process of the in-house technical information system of Mitsui Petrochemical Industries Ltd., “MITOLIS”. This system was constructed in 1981 and has been improved since then to make better use of in-house technical reports. Bibliographic data and keywords of technical reports of R & D division are stored in the host computer system in Iwakuni and can be retrieved by the company members on the desk-side terminal connected to the local area network (LAN). The number of stored reports reaches 6100 from 1970 to 1987.
