    This paper is a record of commemorative lecture at the fifth anniversary of Hokuriku Branch Office's opening. Based on the experiences in improving service at the window of the municipal offices and constructing filing system in the enterprises, filing, retrieving and making use of documents and figures are described. Idea and way of filing, such as paper filing, micro-image filing and optical disk are explained. Comparison and both way conversion between micro-image file and optical disk file, and the future development of filing system are described.

    In order to explain the multilateral use of bibliographic database in research activities, nuclear fusion research field as the comprehensive science was selected. The processing method of the above mentioned database is mainly described. Considering advantages of the bibliographic and indexed information of such database, its use is classified into three types: 1. To use for reference information, 2. To obtain facts and knowledge from information, and 3. To process and analyse information. Each sample corresponding to the above is introduced as follows, and the usefulness of a large scale database is made clear. 1) Use of online search in research activities, 2) Construction of scientific terms list utilizing keywords and their frequency in the database, and 3) To analyse bibliographic information metrically and evaluate research. This is an application of scientometrics.

    Dainihon Computer System Co., Ltd. has developed a map information system called CDMAP which involves residential map of Tokyo 23 Special Districts as well as name and address of the residents in the form of CD-ROM in collaboration with Nihon Columbia Co., Ltd. Based on the know-hows for creating and expressing maps, managing data and so on, which have been accumulated in past several years, author and others have made the maps, investigated, organized and registered the data manually since Fall of 1985, and now completed all of these operations. Because it is a practical management system making best use of characteristics of CD-ROM, it has had public response widely from many fields concerned with it. This paper describes aims of CDMAP development, outlines of CDMAPS and software for management called MAPLAN, and future planning.

    This paper introduces the CD-ROM-aided products and their utilization in foreign countries, mainly in U.S.A. CD-ROM is being used in various fields recently. Author classified its products into four groups:1. CD-ROM that substitutes for printed matters such as encyclopedias and dictionaries (ex. Grolier's Electronic Encyclopedia), 2. CD-ROM that substitutes for online databases (ex. Disclosure, Medline), 3. CD-ROM that has some functions such as giving orders for books besides information retrieval (ex. Books in Print Plus), 4. CD-ROM that contains literatures including pictures and figures (ex. ADONIS). The future trends of CD-ROM utilization are also suggested.

    To illustrate the construction of data base done by a medium-sized company and its practical application, the features of the “AROIS” (Arakawa On Line Information System) developed by Arakawa Chemical Industrial Company, Ltd. in past several years, are described. AROIS is a network system which has been developed and constructed by taking advantages of Demos of N.T.T. on the basis of and in combination with card system and word processing system. It has been designed to compile technical information accumulated by the laboratories into data base, so that any one in various divisions of the company may access to and make use of the information by online. Through batch system, title-lists of various technical fields and their statistical tables can be made. These output data help the technology transfer within the company or technical analysis.
