This is a record of the keynote lecture at the seminar to summarize various discussions on "advanced information society", which have have been carried by Journal of Information Processing and Management. To begin with reviewing very Japanese tendency toward technological determinism in the concept of advanced information society, it is pointed out that other factors such as growth of social needs and flexible telecommunication policy. Megatrends such as "Globalization", "Aging" and "information management" have been brought us diversified problems during the last decade of the 20th century. In the last part of this paper, major problems to be solved for advanced information society are raised.

Recently, many chemists have developed various computer programs for the research of computer chemistry such as computer-aided design of new chemicals or materials. The Japan Chemistry Program Exchange (JCPE) has just started in order to further develop computer chemistry in Japan by making these programs effectively accessible to other chemists who desire to use them. The JCPE will undertake such activities as registration, reference service and distribution of the computer chemistry programs and will contribute to international exchange of these programs. Every chemist who has an interest in this field, regardless of academic or industrial, is asked to be a member of the Exchange.

Visual interaction is one of the key technology for the advanced database system and its human interface. We have been developing the multimedia database system TRADEMARK. It provides the intelligent visual interaction by the use of the image recognition. This paper describes the method and the evaluation of the visual interaction in the TRADEMARK system ; (a) automatic indexing facility, (b) similarity retrieval by visual example and (c) multimedia presentation of retrieved data.

We give an outline of JOIS (JICST On-line Information System) - III, which has been developed as a succession to JOIS-II now being on service by The Japan Information Center of Science and Technology to start servicing in January 1990. JOIS-III is an on-line information retrieval system intended to be a totally up-graded JOIS-II with functional expansion, well-provided data base and high-speed processing of large quantity of data. We also refer to structures of files to be retrieved such as bit-map file, which has been introduced to cope with large-sized data base, and group structure. (2nd part Vol. 32. Managing the widely spreading computing power onto disk-top of end-user sites is becoming one of biggest issues not only information department but also entire organization. In the past, computing in the organization is centralized into one department (information processing) which is positioned as a staff organization in head office. They had been managing, developing and processing of data processing functions centrallaly. "Management Information System" once they dream-ed and also expected by organization's top-management was failed due to technological immaturity. Hence after increasing "Back-log" of developing application systems and system's "Maintenance" has been the department's biggest issue to solve. Evolutions of micro electronics and information network in 1980's are rapidly changing these situations. PC proliferation, end-user computing thru "Host-Micro Link" resuts in wide spread of computing literacy through entire organization. Downsizing/decentraliging of computer power is coming trend. However, more strongly managed centralization of computing operation will be promoted in the area of "Strategic Information System" conducted by CIO. These two mainstream will evolve hybrid fashion to solve current key issues.
