    This paper was presented as a lecture at the 28th Information Science and Technology Meeting. Concerning international development of various projects centered around domestic business activities the author describes its necessity, obstacles, and how to overcome them by adding some cultural aspects to its consideration. First, six factors which are forced to expand internationally are listed. Based on successful exapmples of world-wide enterprises he analyzed the current situation. Peculiarity inherent in Japanese society and language (Japanese) are noted as obstacles. It is suggested that information is a key in order to overcome those obstacles and then develop projects at international scenes, and corporate activities will be directed toward informaiton- intense ones from the time forward.

  • —Outline of Nikkei Telecom BIZ and its aim

    Nihon Keizai Shimbun, Inc., started "Nikkei Telecom BIZ" as a new product of online Information service Nikkei Telecom for personal computers in October, 1990. The major feature is that it makes possible to use a commercial general-purpose communication software by employing TTY as a communication method. The other drastic changes in usual telecom features are 1) opened down load as a principle, 2) unrestricted switching of menu/command method and 3) charging system in proportion to output amount of information. In our database industry not only kinds and number of databases but also users have increased. Responding to this situation BIZ aims at realizing new development in online information services. The author introduces its outline.

  • Analysis of japanese current situation and average image of it

    This is the second series of Think tank (1), (2) and (3) which appeared in Vol.33, No. 9, 10 and 11. The result of questionnaire General Research Development Organization conducted was analyzed and evaluated. Also based on "Think Tank Annual Report 1990" the current situation of Japanese think tanks was analyzed. Through the above analysis the author draws the average image of a think tank in Japan; organization type: public corporation, no. of staffs: 68, no. of researchers: 23, total income: about 700 million yen, income from research activities: about 200 million yen, major subject areas: national land development and use, industry and economy, no. of reports: 25, ratio of independent researches to the total ones: 15%, ratio of disclosed reports to the total ones: 12%. It is pointed out that financial procurement and human resources, i. e. ensuring able specialists, are the most important requirements when a think tank with size of 50 researchers is established.

    Succeeding to the former part of thema "Corporate management strategy and utilizaiton of information", the author describes the phenomena of making various intelligent matters and what it implies, and then proposes the characteristics and image of a intelligent company (IC). Inhouse informaiton use and information creation are closely connected to its organizational climate and corporate values. IC the author proposes works with holonic management, and sort of centripetal movement going toward inside the organization against centrifugal force of corporate identity (I) activities. In order to respond to the environmental change and create new environment each member of an organization must have a critical mind, and behave based on right judgement. With this situation information is extremely indispensable.

  • Information foreign researchers in Japan need from the standpoint of researchers in Tsukuba Science City

    This report describes what kind of information foreign researchers need. This is based on the interview of five foreign researchers in Tsukuba Science City. Most of the problems they are faced with are related to the language. It also turns out that they want local information, guidebooks for researchers, international academic network, database written in English, easier utilization of libraries, and so on.
