    The current status of R & D in small and medium enterprises is discussed from various viewpoints. Shortage of capable personnel has been found to be the largest problem. While the percentage of the number of small and medium enterprises in the total industry is expected to increase toward the 21th century, the problem of the personnel shortage will remain to be solved. On the other hand, there are increasing opportunities for utilizing what is called "Service business for offices and factories" , which can help activate enterprise activities. Several techniques used for supporting R & D of small and medium enterprises are also presented together with examples.

    JICST Chemical Dictionary Database, as central dictionary of JICST Online Factual Database System (JOIS-F), has been extended its scope from low molecular organic compounds to their mixtures. The online service system was extended its function in 1989, and now the search of the mixture type substances are available. Indexing of the chemical substances in literatures, according to JICST Chemical Dictionary nomenclature, was started in January 1990 for 29 journals on trial. The procedure of computer processing and search commands of the mixture type and the indexed substances from literatures, are described.

    The Exploratory Research for Advanced Technology (ERATO) program was established in 1981 for the purpose of fostering the creation of advanced technologies and advancing future interdisciplinary scientific activities while seaching for a better system of basic researh. The trend of basic reseach in science and technology fields, as well as of human resources are the key sources of information for promoting the ERATO program. Some of the methods attempted at the ERATO office for collecting and utilizing such information are described in this paper.
