As of April 1994, the new overseas public relations and information project initiated by the Japan Center for Intercultural Communications in 1985, making use of state-of-the-art technologies and new media, has borne fruit in the form of the Japan Information Network. JIN provides up-to-date English-language information about Japan to institutions around the world. These include Japan Informations Centers, which are located in Japanese diplomatic offices and serve as points of dissemination for information about Japan, as well as major organizations worldwide which conduct research on Japan. JIN is a vast communications network, founded on an extensive database providing English-language versions of Government information and supported by an on-line information system with electronic-mail capacity for responding to ad hoc inquiries. Without becoming too embroiled in detailed descriptions of the technical aspects, I would like to take this opportunity to introduce JIN from the perspective of overseas public relations, the primary objective of the network.
