The growing cost of personal computer ownership-primarily measured by support costs for hardware, networks, operating system and applications software-is a key to drive innovation around network centric lightweight hardware and software. Apple, IBM, Oracle, Netscape and Sun all agreed on making an open client-based computing standard, noted as"Network Computer Reference Profile", in May, 1996. Network computers are stripped-down desktop computers built to do their work while connected to networks.

Disease name thesaurus has been compiled by using"Word Clearing", probably the first thesaurus management system in Japan. It assigns a unique code on individual disease concept and the relation between disease names can be understood from the code. Some of useful functions of"Word Clearing" are (1) displaying a hierarchial relation between terms visually in one frame(synonyms, broader terms, narrower terms and related terms);(2) checking of hierarchial relation of terms;(3) automatically formation of search statements. It has high value since there is a growing need toward user-friendly thesaurus. Author indicates a direction of future thesaurus:thesaurus should not be a slave of a database, and must have wide applicabilites to varius database management systems.

To determine the"practical lifespan" of documents, a survey was made of the dates when papers listed as references for articles were published, and a statistical analysis was carried out. First, the publication,"IEEE Trans. on Electron Devices" was examined. A practical lifespan of 5.3 years found in 1995 means that retrospective searching throughout the previous 5.3 years may cover 50% of the necessary literature. A study of more than 30 years up to 1995 shows that the lifespans have gradually become longer. Next, similar studies were made of many 1995 journals in the fields of science, engineering and medicine. The differing lifespans found are thought to reflect the differences in progress of the research and development of the various fields.
