The growing cost of personal computer ownership-primarily measured by support costs for hardware, networks, operating system and applications software-is a key to drive innovation around network centric lightweight hardware and software. Apple, IBM, Oracle, Netscape and Sun all agreed on making an open client-based computing standard, noted as"Network Computer Reference Profile", in May, 1996. Network computers are stripped-down desktop computers built to do their work while connected to networks.
