    A CD-ROM edition of Index Chemicus (a so-called"Current Contents" for synthetic compounds) has been launched this year. Index Chemicus on CD(IC-CD)features an easy-to-use search option for both Text and Structures, as well as combination search capability. For text search, 19 searchable fields are available(13 at the article level &６at the compound level). Biological activity & Class of compound are indexed as controlled vocabulary. Substructure searches can be done by either drawing an extract or by selecting one from any known substance. For easy drawing, some 70 shortcuts are provided, including isolated and aromatic ring systems, as well as functional groups. Pull down options for Atom selection, Bond selection and the Periodic table are also provided.

    "Functional Alloys Database" developed by JST contains full-text database of SGML/HTML documents which are produced by scanning and digitizing articles about functional alloys. The distribution system is based on HTTPD-server popular in TCP/IP network. And the retrieval system has high-performance full-text searching engine. In this paper, we introduce this system mainly on user-interface.

    With the selection of softwares in Internet given as a subject, Kinds of services practically usable in Internet, its rolls and typical softwares are briefly listed up in this paper, and electronic mail and WWW are commented on that they are a part of softwares applicable in Internet. Also it comes in touch with uarious circumstances and historical backqrounds of these services and Internet. Kinds of softwares when practically using them, information that introduce various softwares, and its accessible methods are described as well.
