The Fifth International Conference on Japanese Information was held from July 30 to August 1,1997 at the U.S. Library of Congress in Washington D.C. The first conference was held at Warwick in the U.K. on February in 1987, which was ten years ago. First of all, the author compared each paper presented in the past four conferences in order to grasp distinguished themes and subjects on the information world. Next, recognizing the awareness of the events and the environmental changes (new evolution for facilitating information flow like effect of the Internet, etc.) occurring in the current age helps to understand individual paper, the questions with which American and European countries are grappling, such as free MEDLINE access through the Internet, Report of NRC, information policies in France and Germany, EU Database Directive, recommendations of ICSU/UNESCO Conference on Electronic Publishing in Science and the follow-up for the recommendations by ICSTI, were described.
