Railway Technical Research Institute has developed a digital library service under the concept of"a library accessible by anyone anytime from anywhere". We surveyed a number of digital library systems to determine a system and digital data collection needed for a special library of railway technologies. This system consists of a library cataloging system, railway technology information database, newspaper article database, railway technical term dictionary and railway standard database.

Ritsumeikan Art Research Center (ARC) has been promoting its own research on arts in a unique way combining cultural science and scientific technology, especially in the field of traditional performing arts disappearing with time or intangible culture native to Kyoto. Research Center consists of air-conditioned library and exhibition room, a studio where different kinds of high-tech media are available, a workshop for digital archive processing, and a multipurpose room with hinoki floor (for noh, kyogen, or kyo-mai dance) where every subtle movement of the performer can be recorded/analyzed through multangular video tape recording and motion - capturing system devices. These facilities also make it possible to record, store, search, reproduce and even transmit the materials, ranging from classical or up-to-date, at a sitting. ARC has been successful in reproducing some original images onto the screen and kept the know - how of it. As the most advanced research institution on Japanese traditional performing arts, ARC is on its way developing a new method for image processing in bulk.

In order to collect information for developing JST's electronic journal system, J-STAGE, we visited American Physical Society (APS), American Institute of Physics (AIP), Association of Computing Machinery (ACM), American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE), and HighWire. We interviewed American Chemical Society (ACS) separately. SGML was used widely to develop electronic journals. Web-based manuscript submission and peer-reviewing were tried, but not extensively yet. Hearing results were summerized.
