Recent advances in digital technology are expected to increase the distribution of multimedia digital contents in packaged and electronic media. At the same time, these advances have raised the issue of copyright protection to prevent illegal copying of digital contents. This paper describes the system requirements and applicability to different types of digital contents of a copyright protection system using a digital watermark to prevent illegal copying and manage copy generation. As an example, we describe the effectiveness of this copyright protection system with MPEG-2 video on DVD, a typical packaged media. The paper also discusses the application of this copyright protection system to the distribution of digital contents on a network.

The Ministry of Health and Welfare (MHW) started a service providing"Drug Information System" through the Internet to promote safety usage of drugs on May 31, 1999, in which MHW provides information about package inserts for ethical drugs and drug safety to medical doctors, dentists or pharmacists. In this service, The Organization for Pharmaceutical Safety and Research is centered as a provider of the information. The system includes two kinds of information: one is prepared by pharmaceutical industries such as package inserts of ethical drugs (SGML or PDF files), urgent drug safety information, and approval of new drugs (results of non clinical and clinical trials); the other is prepared by MHW such as various drug safety information, case reports of suspect adverse drug reactions, and approval of new drugs (examination reports).

Konan University is currently installing access points to everywhere on the campus under the joint support of the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications and the Ministry of Education, Science, Sports and Culture, in order for wireless LAN terminals to connect remotely to the local area campus network and the Internet. The project has started about three years ago, and will last the next year. The wireless LAN terminals, each of which is composed of a laptop computer and an inserted wireless LAN PC card have been distributed to some of the students and the professors. Then, we performed some experiments targeting a future ubiquitous computing/networking environment. In this environment, each student will utilize information services as needed by means of a mobile terminal in every space. In this paper, the current wireless campus LAN environment and educational on-line services are shown and summary of the experiments is reported.
