Social concerns over advanced research have grown in Japan since the establishment of the Basic Plan for Science and Technology in 1996. An example of it is Subaru Telescope in Hawaii. Assuming that seeds of advanced research still exist, it is important to discover advanced research issues and promote their development. This involves, first of all, a program to survey advanced research. The search method of research consists of a peer review + senior review. We found that life science and information science should be merged. We also studied ways to promote advanced research.

"IPSJ Magazine" is a monthly periodical of the Information Processing Society of Japan. Since the January 1998 issue, its size has been changed from B5 to A4. In April 1998 an editor-in-chief was appointed, and under his consistent editorial direction, our magazine has been changed to a new style aiming for members who have little knowledge of computer technology to be able to understand without much difficulty. At the same time we have started to take full use of DTP. In this article our experience of editorial works using DTP and its merits are described.

The polymer dictionary, a module in the JST polymer database, is a chemical registry system for polymer. In the polymer dictionary, a polymer is identified by the chemical structure of each constitutional repeating unit, one of the data elements essential to complete the identification of polymeric materials. In this paper, the definition of line notation system for constitutional repeating units and the transformation rule to get one unique representation from several different expressions are described. The policy in preparing polymer names and the guideline of polymer nomenclature based on IUPAC rules are also described.

JICST Machine Translation system J to E for Windows was started to sell in September, 1998. Its mainframe version was first brought on line in 1990. Since that time, while operating the system, we have continued to add grammatical rules and update the translation dictionary. The Windows version was developed based on the mainframe version, and includes a system dictionary which contains about 600 thousand entries. It is designed to translate scientific and technical documents from Japanese into English. Using the user dictionary reduces translation time. Writing Japanese sentences suitable for the machine translation system is helpful for effective use of the system.
