    The Japanese Government approved the"Annual Report on the Promotion of Science and Technology 1999" (White Paper on Science and Technology 2000) in the Cabinet Meeting on June 9, 2000. This paper digests the Part 1 of the report entitled"Towards the 21st Century", which describes a new relationship between science & technology and society in the 21st century, in addition to looking back at the development of mankind and of science & technology in the 20th century.

    This article represents a method of analysis of a scholar's research works using JOIS system. The document retrieval system of bibliographic database on the JOIS have a controlled index term system. For the statistical analysis of the retrieved set, we can use \SEL command. Using this command, it's easy and speedy to get a statistical and analytical results. This paper explains analysis methods and some examples.

    JST, Japan Science and Technology Corporation, has developed J-STORE, JST Science and Technology Research Result Database for Enterprise Development, for purpose of promoting technology transfer of research results generated by national research institutes, universities and JST, and initiated to get the database opened to the public through the Internet. J-STORE provides information of research results anticipated for practical use as technology seeds, and has the background information including patents and research reports linked to each other. It enables ones to do category and full-text searching, and to get quick access to data by thumbnail photos, tables and figures. It also provides information on JST's research support system in the form of flow charts or tables. Thus J-STORE makes comprehensive the information services which support from the initial stage of finding technology seed through its practical use.

    Directory database is constructed by utilizing Microsoft Access that is a database software for the use of personal computer. After considering the positioning database exists in information management, database is made by using"Wizard". It is necessary to comprehend a definition of table which is a core of database, to comprehend a definition of input-output interface and to comprehend the method that defines database once again. This manuscript introduces some steps to use a database as follows 1. Confirmation of the positioning of directory database, 2. Construction of the database by"Wizard", 3. Confirmation of the method that changes definitions of tables, forms and reports, 4. Confirmation of the method that utilizes a database with other software.
