    Genome related technology is one of the subject areas which have been increasingly and much attended. Not only gene recombination technology but also other aspects including genes themselves, fragmented genes, gene diagnosis have become highly recognized as patents, so that the technology is targeted by venture business which are always seeking possible business chances. The firms concerned with it have been applying for patents where new gene concepts are incorporated. With this situation the author traces the technological trends covering Japanese and overseas patents, and tries to find any situation peculiar to genome patents. How to search with those patents are also described.

    Based on the results of a research titled “Survey of databases of chemical substances and materials” (2000), current status and future directions of those databases are presented. The survey consists of 1)current status of chemical & material databases and comparison with other scientific fields, 2)interviews with researchers, and 3)suggestions on schemes of databases and frameworks for development. In this article, we discuss characteristics of chemical & material databases, user's needs, situation in other scientific fields (life science and earth science), desirable scheme of databases, and co-operation of research institutes and database producers.

    The group of one session of TOPIC organized by JST Tokyo Branch Office for the year of 2000 had studied the theme “Aggressive challenge of information divisions” throughout the year. Information environment surrounding information divisions of firms are changing. The Internet brings us convenience of searching information we need very simply while it brings some dispute over that information divisions might be not required any more if they remain the same as used to be. In this connection we, information personnel, have to get the management to be aware properly and right way that information divisions really contribute to firms or organizations they are affiliated with, and at the same time have to have cost oriented mind, endeavor to get more customers, create new services and take part in projects. It is indispensable for us to utilize human links we have, to effectively use the Internet as a means for information personnel, to contribute to the firms or organizations by solving problems our customers are encountering. It is a way of our surviving.

    The author first outlines basic idea and role of the Legislation titled “Basic Law on the Formation of an Advanced Information and Telecommunications Network Society” (usually called IT Basic Law), then does E-Japan which aims at leading IT nation in the world based on the Internet Network which allows ones to access to it at the most speed. In further detailed he describes “e-Japan Priority Policy Program” covering the measures the Government should execute urgently in order to build an advanced telecommunications network society centered around the legal aspects. The author also mentions international IT related legislation arrangement based on recognition that it would be essential for nations concerned to be coordinated or linked among them for making a global network in IT societies and promoting e-commerce.
