    The article addresses various problems in the current Japanese Trademark Law including the accumulation of registered trademarks that are not actually in use and registered trademark usage. The Japanese trademarks registration system has brought increase in the number of trademarks that are registered but not used. The author presents problems created by the accumulation of registered but not used trademarks and steps to be taken against those trademarks. The author also introduces the recent court decisions on trademark similarity and various trademark usage situations. Actually many issues are solved by showing trademark’s function as an attribute to indicate the origin of goods/services. The author recommends that we should be guided by these decisions in the future.

    Libraries as treasure house of knowledge have long contributed to human development. Libraries in Japan have, however, emphasized function, rationality and efficiency responding to economical requirement imposed to them. Arrival of “Ubiquitous network technology” is expected to make those libraries re-born. What is the situation today for wireless IC chip technology, a core technology in Ubiquitous Network? How is wireless IC chip technology used in systems which can be of use for librarians or users under the severe condition surrounding the present libraries. This article introduces actual use of IC chips in libraries considering the current issues and progress.

    CBI Journal is an online journal published by using the JST's on-line journal publishing support system, J-STAGE. The journal is the research journal of the Chem-Bio Informatics Society. This journal started as an on-line journal from the very beginning, it covers wide range of interdisciplinary areas, and it is being published by the staff of the society without outsourcing to a commercial publisher. Painstaking works have been required before the staff can up load the articles smoothly. More public supports are needed for activities.

    Interactive Internet Survey System (IISS) was developed by the City of Sendai under cooperation with Japan Science and Technology Corporation and a science museum located in Sendai and established as a model project for consolidating regional science museums over the nation. IISS is now recognized as a nation-wide survey system of animals and plants. Being featured by interactive function and real time brought by the Internet IISS has possibility of deployment to become a survey system of organisms handled not only by citizens but also by biology specialists. This paper describes development history of this system, the system organization and actual investigation of animals and plants.
