In Japan the Government has launched the following policies in order to recover from economic stagnation and to enhance international economic competitiveness: 1) academia-industry collaboration policies which science and technology oriented policy and patent oriented policy comprise, and 2) new business starting policies using regional industrial resources. To promote academia-industry collaboration, and new business start ones really need to use information. It is, however, found that TLO, i.e., technology transferring organization, and business incubator facility unlikely use commercial databases. It is essential that information be used effectively at such facilities as TLO, business incubator. To do this end information professionals at first need to change their consciousness about information handling that they used to do, then grasp information needs in new areas including TLO where highly motivated and skilled people are involved. Besides information professionals must think well of roles ones expect them to play, have smooth communication with information users, and collaborate with them aggressively.

After briefly reviewing the information explosion and the emergence of the information industry in Europe, this paper discusses, in depth, current topics relating to information/knowledge management in the pharmaceutical industry as illustrated by the activities of the P-D-R (Pharma Documentation Ring) Group of companies - a corporate organisation devoted to exchanging/sharing experience in these areas. The overwhelming majority of the top 20 multinational pharmaceutical companies are P-D-R members. The P-D-R is a powerful driver for high standards in commercial information and associated services as well encouraging the introduction of new ones. To this end, the organisation maintains intensive contact with all major players of the international information industry relevant to healthcare. Some highlights from the recent work of the P-D-R are presented to help depict its impact on the scientific information scene in Europe and beyond.

How many users can utilize libraries effectively and efficiently increasingly becomes an important factor of academic libraries evaluation from the time forward. Thus role of library guidance which is the first step for library users to take is expected to be big. Japan Women’s University built e-learning program for library guidance in August, 2003. Library users are allowed to learn how to use the University Library on the Web site any time as they like to do. The e-learning contents cover procedures they need to take when they enter and leave the Library and while they stay at the Library, basic exercise of searching with databases including the OPAC, the Library building guide, outline of the Library services, then quiz to know what to extent library users learned how to use the Library through this e-learning program. The whole program is about sixty minutes long. It is desirable that from now on this program be extended to such an e-learning program as ones enable to learn how well to utilize information specialized in each of academic programs of the University.

The purposes of J-STAGE2 development are: 1) to respond to the increasing use, 2) to improve the usability for academic societies 3) to develop the functions competitive to overseas e-journal sites. At J-STAGE2, since data is controlled in integrated way, operation cost is expected to decrease, and cross retrieval becomes allowed.
