Introducing manuscript submission and peer-reviewing system, or manuscript tracking system, means a transition from the traditional peer reviewing via postal mails and facsimiles to the Web/e-mail based system. This transition will deliver many benefits, such as the speed-up of the reviewing, reduction of the clerical works, improvement of convenience and reliability, and incorporating additional functions supporting the reviewers.
J-STAGE, an e-journal platform for Japanese academic societies, has released a customizable peer-reviewing system in 2005. Now all the electronic journal publication steps, manuscript submission, peer-reviewing, production, and online publishing are seamlessly available in a single environment. Its system development concept, function, and future plans are discussed along with tips for academic societies in Japan in introducing a peer-reviewing system.
