Establishing clear protocols for complicated experimental procedures has been a main factor in the recent rapid development of biology. Most protocols are written in a text format, which limits the amount of information that can be conveyed. Thus, it often takes a very long time to establish new experimental systems based on text alone. The Journal of Visualized Experiments (JoVE) is an academic video-sharing service and an online video journal that has attracted the attention of the scientific community. Here, we introduce the concept of JoVE, which is to publish a visual representation of experimental protocols so that they can be shared among the entire scientific community. This novel online video journal for scientific experimental protocols will increase the reproducibility and transparency of experimental studies, which is currently a bottleneck for progress in the life sciences.

A forum featured scientific information distribution was held at one of the biggest meetings on life sciences in Japan. The forum organized by the author did not have a great success with many participants, but there were some fruits. I and a co-organizer presented the concepts such as “serials crisis”, “institutional repositories” and “open access”, those unfamiliar for general life scientists. Scientific information distribution was shown to be important for science communication and the progress of research. From the view point of science communication, several points are turned out to have a great significance. Self-archiving by researchers themselves and the institutional and financial support system for encouraging that, requests for institutional repositories of huge national research agencies, and the big role of funding agencies are those points. Some proposals to improve the current scientific information distribution from the view point of science communication.

Tottori prefectual library has been changing rapidly in terms of service for its users. There are two goals in this change. They are: “Let people in Tottori understand the basic functions of library”, “Let people recognize library as a reliable source of information which can resolve regional and personal problems”. In order to meet these goals effectively, we have analyzed the library by SWOT analysis model. In this paper, we will introduce the results in four aspects: (1) Do we inform the library's function to people and administrational staffs of Tottori prefecture (do we exploit our strength fully), (2) In the time of opportunity, is there anything left yet to do (opportunity), (3) How can we make up for our weaknesses, (4) Is the threat really a threat? Also, as a case study, we will introduce our “Dreams come true in library” award, which is funded by the “Supporting regional library service” of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology.

Via the Internet we surveyed full text availability of 9,098 STM journals published in Japan, which JST is continuously collecting. Full texts of 3,558 journals (39 percents of JST collection) are electronically available and provided by publishers or aggregators. Features of publisher's type, journal type and category of 3,558 journals were analyzed. Digitalization ratio of STM academic journals and scholarly journals published in Japan was 47 percents.
