    The appearance and spread of digital books are pressing for the change of the industrial structure based on the printing technique, physical distribution, and product sales. It also affects the circulation of scholarly information and cultural accumulation, which are the important roles that publications have played. Digital books might change the library's function and institutional design as well. The purpose of this paper is to 1) explain the present condition of the digital books facing a difficulty with popularization, 2) discuss the system maintenance and the Copyright Act revision required for popularization, and 3) consider its influence on the library services, and the desired correspondences.

    This article overviews the background and the history of the open access (OA) movement, and summarizes current issues of OA. It has been revealed that Gold OA is sustainable business model. Whereas Green OA with institutional repositories has not been a success, there are some successful examples with funder mandates for OA. In addition, funders, institutions and governments which mandate OA for researchers have been increasing. Commercial publishers adopt Gold or hybrid OA in their business and compete librarians for initiative of the OA movement. In this situation, availability of OA contents and embargo periods have been the issues of today's OA movement.

    PATENTSCOPE, WIPO's patent information database available online free of charge, holds more than 2.2 million PCT data and national/regional patent information. The total collection amounts to almost 30 million and is increasing. PATENTSCOPE allows users flexible retrieval with Boolean operators, wildcard and proximity operators. It can easily visualize search results in the form of tables and graphs. In order to achieve efficient retrieval on patent documents in different languages, PATENTSCOPE provides unique functions of Cross Lingual Information Retrieval, which automatically translates inputted queries into 12 languages. In this article, an overview of PATENTSCOPE is presented.

    "Open data" attracts attention as part of the information disclosure by governments and public institutions. Although the spread of the open data movement in Japan is behind as compared with the Western countries, quality and quantity of data are improved quickly by efforts of governmental agencies and citizens. In this paper, we introduce advanced case in Japan and discuss issues and future view of open data.

    For the sake of providing evidences that contribute to policy making or strategy planning in a Japanese version of the NIH and pharmaceutical companies, we tried an overview and future prospects of pharmaceutical industry based on new indicators. We focused on the R&D pipelines of each pharmaceutical company. The results show that the R&D capacity of each country in the current stage and in future can be measured, by structuring the pipeline data in each R&D step, comparing the number of marketed pharmaceuticals and so on. Consequently, the competitive advantage of US and the idiosyncrasy of Japan have been thrown into sharp relief.
