The retrospective studies on the visual functions in patients with retinopathy of prematurity have been made in Hakodate area, and the following results were obtained.
(1) A close relationship was observed between the grade of the retinal scar and visual functions such as refractive errors, visual acuity, occurrence of strabismus and binocular function.
(2) In cases more advanced than the Grade II of the cicatrical phase, it seems difficult for them to obtain normal visual functions at a later time.
(3) Photocoagulation for retinopathy of prematurity was proved effective when it was applied in the 3rd Stage of the active phase of type I and rush type (type II).
(4) Among the cases with were had been received no light coagulation, several cases lost their vision with retinal detachment at the age of ten years, in spite of their spontaneous recovery with remaining scars.
Therefore, we have realized the importance of a long-terms follow up of these cases.
