    The detergency of products, mainly textiles, was evaluated using various experimental systems and discussed from the viewpoint of interfacial phenomena. The detergency phenomena observed for geometrically simple model systems were explained in terms of the total potential energy of interaction between the soil and the substrate, which was calculated as the sum of the electrical double layer, Lifshitzvan der Waals, and acid-base interactions using electrokinetic potentials and surface free energy components. Cleaning experiments using artificially soiled fabrics were performed using electro-osmotic flow and ultrasound as mechanical actions for soil removal, and the results were compared with those obtained with mechanical actions commonly used in textile washing. Simultaneous hydrophilization of the substrate and soil by an atmospheric pressure plasma jet remarkably improved the detergency in aqueous solutions. The application of the atmospheric pressure plasma jet to anti-fouling textiles was also proposed.

    In this review, we demonstrate that the practical applications of a novel long-chain amidoamine derivative with a simple molecular structure (C18AA) are equivalent to or higher in number than those of supramolecules with complex molecular structures. Molecular assemblies of C18AA exhibit distinctive thermal responsiveness; namely, C18AA can form a gel with apolar organic solvents, while O/W emulsions of C18AA act as a heat-induced gelator that undergoes a phase transition from solution to gel upon heating. We also show that C18AA emulsions containing a quaternary ammonium salt develop an iridescent color over a specific temperature range. Further, molecular assemblies of C18AA serve as high-performance soft templates for the preparation of shape-controlled metal nanocrystals such as ultrathin Au nanowires and Pd nanowires.

    Fine particles obtained from the physical refining of organic cold pressed vegetable oils which are normally discarded as a process waste can be utilized as cosmetic and food ingredients. This paper demonstrated the use of the fine particles from rice bran (Thai Jasmine and Riceberry varieties), sunflower and sesame oils as the ingredient in body mask and as dietary fiber. It was found that the fine particles from rice brans exhibited better antioxidant properties than those of sunflower and sesame. The mixed fine particles were added to body mask formula. The addition of the fine particles affected the physical properties and stability of the body mask especially viscosity and pH. Total dietary fiber recovered from the fine particles ranged from 17.91–23.83 g/100g dry sample. Dietary fiber from Riceberry exhibited the best antioxidant properties as evidenced by DPPH radical scavenging activity and reducing power.

    Single cell oils produced by oleaginous microorganisms have attracted increasing interests as a petroleum alternative energy. Marine eukaryotes, thraustochytrids were heterotrophic, and can grow rapidly and accumulate large amount of lipids containing functional fatty acids, such as docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) in their cells body. In this investigation, thraustochytrids isolated from marine environment were cultured in the medium containing an industrial waste and an unused resource, distillery lees (Shochu kasu) to produce biofuel or functional fatty acids by microorganisms. Sixty-nine thraustochytrids and Schizochytrium aggregatum ATCC 28209 were screened for cellulase production, and the activities were detected using sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) as a substrate. Based on the screening test, strain TM02Bc identified to Schizochytrium sp. was selected for the Shochu kasu degradation test and compared with S. aggregatum ATCC 28209 previously known as a cellulase-producing thraustochytrid. Strains TM02Bc and ATCC 28209 were cultured in artificial seawater containing Shochu kasu for 15 days. The two strains could degrade Schochu kasu, especially that from sweet potato Shochu (Imo Shochu). Cellulase (CMCase) and protease activities were detected in culture supernatant of both strains, and the ratio of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) significantly increased as a result of incubation of Shochu kasu with two strains. This preliminary study indicated that strain TM02Bc was a potent candidate for Shochu kasu treatment and fatty acid production.

    The current investigation aimed to evaluate the influence of roselle seeds oil (RSO), coconut oil (CNO) and binary mixture of them on serum lipids of experimental rats. Fatty acid composition of native and blended oils was determined. Thirty five male Albino rats (145- 160 g) were used throughout this study. The rats were fed AIN-93G diet containing 10% fat from CNO, RSO, B1 (25%RSO+ 75 %CNO), B2 (50 %RSO+ 50 %CNO or B3 (75 %RSO+ 25 % CNO) for eight weeks. Blood samples were collected at the beginning, every two weeks during the experiment, and at the end of the experiment. At the time of sacrifice, organs weights in relation to their body weights were immediately recorded. Substitution of 25, 50 and 75 % of CNO with equal amounts of RSO reduced saturated fatty acids by 16.04, 32.58 and 48.77 %, respectively in blended oils. The content of linoleic (C18:2) increased from not detected level in CNO to 9.81, 19.67 and 29.48 % in CNO blended with 25, 50 and 75 % of RSO, respectively. The relative liver weights of rats fed CNO was significantly higher than that of those fed RSO and blended oils. Mixing CNO with various levels of RSO attenuates the adverse effect in the relative liver weights which caused by CNO administration. At the end of the experiment, blinding coconut oil with 25, 50 and 75 % of roselle oil inhibited the elevation in total cholesterol by 9.69, 28.16 and 36.16 %, respectively compared to CNO rats. Rats fed diet containing CNO for 8 weeks had significantly the highest content (126.49 mg/dl) of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, while those fed 100 % RSO (as a source of lipids) had the lowest concentration of LDL-C (64.32 mg/dL). Atherogenic index (AI) values of rats submitted B1, B2 and B3 were about 1.12, 1.23 and 1.28 times as low as those of rats fed CNO diet, respectively. The results of this study indicate that roselle seeds oil (RSO) reduces hyperlipidemia and hypercholesterolemia in rats fed diet rich in saturated fatty acids.

    This study was designed to assess the antioxidant, antidiabetic and antihypertensive effects of essential oils from A. melegueta and A. danielli seeds. The essential oils were extracted via hydrodistillation, dried with anhydrous Na2SO4 and characterized using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Antioxidant properties and inhibition of some pro-oxidant induced lipid peroxidation in rats’ pancreas and heart homogenates were also determined. The results revealed that eugenol, eucalyptol, α-terpineol, α-caryophyllene and β-caryophyllene were the most abundant components in A. melegueta and A. danielli seeds. The essential oils inhibited α-amylase, α-glucosidase and angiotensin-I-converting enzyme in vitro. A.melegueta oil showed a higher α-amylase and α- glucosidase inhibitory activities with EC50 values of 139.00 µL/mL and 91.83 µL/mL respectively than A. danielli. However, A. danielli oil (EC50 = 48.73 µL/mL) showed the highest ACE inhibitory acivity. The highest NO radical scavenging ability was observed in A. melegueta oil while A. danielli had the highest OH radical scavenging and Fe2+- chelating ability. Furthermore, both essential oils inhibited SNP and Fe2+- induced lipid peroxidation in rats’ pancreas and heart respectively in a dose dependent manner. This study reveals the biochemical principle by which essential oils from A. danielli and A.melegueta seed elicits their therapeutic effects on type-2 diabetes and hypertension.

    There are very few reports on the phytochemistry of the Arabis L. (Brassicaceae) species in the literature. Here we present essential oil composition of aerial parts of two endemic Arabis species from Cyprus. The essential oils of Arabis purpurea Sm. and Arabis cypria Holmboe afforded very low oil yields (< 0.01% (v/w) yield). Sixty six compounds were identified in the essential oil of A. purpurea that represent 82.75 ± 0.21 % (n = 3) of the oil. The major components of the oil were nonacosane 16.18 ± 0.13 %, heptacosane 14.91 ± 0.17 %, hexahydrofarnesyl acetone 12.44 ± 0.10 % and phytol 7.36 ± 0.10 % (n = 3). Forty three compounds were identified in the essential oil of A. cypria which represent 81.28 ± 1.55 % (n = 3) of the oil. The major components of the oil were nonacosane 20.25 ± 0.47 %, heptacosane 9.13 ± 1.88 %, hexahydrofarnesyl acetone 9.03 ± 0.44 % and 1-tetradecanol 4.38 ± 2.60 % (n = 3). To the best of our knowledge this is the first report on the essential oil compositions of these species.

    The chemical constituents of the essential oil extracted from Artemisia anethoides and the bioactivities of essential oil against Tribolium castaneum and Lasioderma serricorne were investigated. The main components of the essential oil were 1,8-cineole (36.54%), 2-isopropyl-5-methyl-3-cyclohexen-1-one (10.40%), terpinen-4-ol (8.58%), 2-isopropyltoluene (6.20) and pinocarveol (5.08%). The essential oil of A. anethoides possessed contact and fumigant toxicities against T. castaneum adults (LD50 = 28.80 μg/adult and LC50 = 13.05 mg/L air, respectively) and against L. serricorne (LD50 = 24.03 μg/adult and LD50 = 8.04 mg/L air, respectively). The crude oil showed repellent activity against T. castaneum and L. serricorne. Especially, the percentage repellency of essential oil was same level with DEET (positive control) against T. castaneum. The results indicated that the essential oil of A. anethoides had the potential to be developed as insecticide and repellent for control of T. castaneum and L. serricorne.

    In order to investigate chemical scavenging mechanism of singlet oxygen, superoxide anion radical, and hydroxyl radical by carotenoids, reaction products obtained by reacting β-carotene or zeaxanthin with singlet oxygen, superoxide anion radical, and hydroxyl radical were analyzed by LC/PDA ESI-MS, and ESR spectrometry. β-Carotene endoperoxides were identified as the major reaction products of β-carotene and singlet oxygen, while β-carotene epoxides were the major reaction products of β-carotene and superoxide anion or hydroxyl radical. Similar results to those for β-carotene were obtained with zeaxanthin.

    Fatty acids in triacylglycerols (TAGs) are catabolized after digestion. However, the catabolic rates of the fatty acids at the sn-1, sn-2, and sn-3 positions of TAGs have not been compared. To elucidate the differences, we studied the catabolic rates of 13C-labeled palmitic acid, oleic acid, and capric acid at the sn-1, sn-2, or sn-3 position of TAGs using isotope-ratio mass spectrometry. Specifically, we measured the 13C-to-12C ratio in CO213C (‰)) exhaled by mice. For all analyzed fatty acids, we observed significant differences between sn-2 and other binding positions. In contrast, no significant difference was detected between the sn-1 and sn-3 positions. These results indicated that the catabolic rates of fatty acids are strongly influenced by their positions in TAGs.

    Geobacter spp., regarded as strict anaerobes, have been reported to grow under aerobic conditions. To elucidate the role of fatty acids in aerobiosis of Geobacter spp., we studied the effect of aerobiosis on fatty acid composition and turnover in G. bemidjiensis BemT. G. bemidjiensis BemT was grown under the following different culture conditions: anaerobic culture for 4 days (type 1) and type 1 culture followed by 2-day anaerobic (type 2) or aerobic culture (anaerobic-to-aerobic shift; type 3). The mean cell weight of the type 3 culture was approximately 2.5-fold greater than that of type 1 and 2 cultures. The fatty acid methyl ester and hydrocarbon fraction contained hexadecanoic (16:0), 9-cis-hexadecenoic [16:1(9c)], tetradecanoic (14:0), tetradecenoic [14:1(7c)] acids, hentriacontanonaene, and hopanoids, but not long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids. The type 3 culture contained higher levels of 14:0 and 14:1(7c) and lower levels of 16:0 and 16:1(9c) compared with type 1 and 2 cultures. The weight ratio of extracted lipid per dry cell was lower in the type 3 culture than in the type 1 and 2 cultures. We concluded that anaerobically-grown G. bemidjiensis BemT followed by aerobiosis were enhanced in growth, fatty acid turnover, and de novo fatty acid synthesis.
