Extraction of teeth in rats was found to stimulate increased mitotic activity in bone marrow for 2 days after extraction. The cause of this increased mitosis might be release from the extraction site of kinins, factors which are known to stimulate mitosis in the bone marrow or a general whole-body response to trauma.

The purpose of this study was to examine histologically the effects of propolis topical application to dental sockets and skin wounds.
After topical application of either a 10 % hydro-alcoholic solution of propolis or 10 % hydro-alcoholic solution alone, cutaneous wound healing and the socket wound after tooth extraction were examined.
The rats were sacrificed at 3, 6, 9, 15 and 21 days after the operation. The specimens were subjected to routine laboratory studies after staining with hematoxylin and eosin. It was concluded that topical application of propolis hydro-alcoholic solution accelerated epithelial repair after tooth extraction but had no effect on socket wound healing.

The concentrations of ampicillin in serum and mixed saliva after a single oral administration of lenampicillin (500 mg) were determined by the paper disc method. The samples of serum and mixed saliva were obtained at 1, 2, 3 and 4 h after administration. The highest concentrations of ampicillin in serum and mixed saliva occurred 1 h after administration of lenampicillin, and were 11.55 and 0.060μg/ml, respectively. A significant correlation coefficient between the concentrations of ampicillin in serum and mixed saliva, r =0.71, P <0.001, was found.

A study was conducted on 21 cases of ameloblastoma (a type of tumor containing an embedded tooth) and 87 cases of dentigerous cyst. The former cases were selected from among those which had been diagnosed histopathologically. Using radiographs of these lesions, the following parameters were measured : 1) the distance between the cement-enamel junction of the embedded tooth and its attachment to the cystic wall; 2) the area of the radiolucent image (similar to the area with a cystic appearance). From measurements of the former parameter, it appeared that the embedded tooth extends more toward the root apex in ameloblastoma than in dentigerous cyst, whereas the latter parameter indicated that the radiolucent area varies in size slightly in ameloblastoma, but tends to be smaller in dentigerous cyst.
Moreover, with regard to clustering between ameloblastoma and dentigerous cyst, no definite tendency was detected on distance, whereas only ameloblastoma without dentigerous cyst was seen above 20 cm2 of area.

Co-Cr alloy is used more frequently than Ni-Cr alloy as a non-precious alloy for cast plates in Japan. However, since the melting point of Co-Cr alloy is very high, about 1300°C, and since it oxidizes easily, a vacuum-pressure casting machine capable of melting this alloy in a reducing atmosphere has recently been developed.
Using this vacuum-pressure casting machine, the authors studied the effects on the castability of Co-Cr alloy due to the form of sprue attachment to the wax pattern.
The results clarified that in the vacuum-pressure casting method, the form of sprue attachment to the wax pattern has a significant effect (p <0.01) on the castability of Co-Cr alloy.

Granular cell tumor of the tongue in a 29-year-old woman is reported including details of studies using electron microscopy and immunohistochemistry. Immunohistochemically, the tumor cells showed moderate positivity for S-100 protein. Electron microscopically, basal lamina, angulate bodies, myelin-like figures and axon-like structures were observed in the tumor. These findings may indicate that this tumor is a lesion of Schwann cell origin. The Japanese literature on oral granular cell tumor is also reviewed and discussed.
