A physical distance that a user wants to keep with a moving desk-top robot depends on the user’s sense of distance, such as personal working area or physical reaching range of the user. This analysis clarifies the following two points obtained from two experiments.
1.An oval-shaped area of distance that a user wants an approaching robot to stop resembles a range of forearms moved around fixed elbows drawing two circles
2.An oval-shaped area of distance that a user wants a leaving robot to stop resembles a range of arms moved around fixed shoulders drawing two large circles
