The purpose of this paper is to examine "home projects" in Japanese home economics education during the period of rapid economic growth. Home projects are a learning method based on the project method, and were introduced into home economics and agricultural courses in Japan in the postwar period. In this method, students use the knowledge they learned in class to think about problems in their own homes (such as communication issues between family members and uncomfortable living environments) and solve them with the assistance of their teachers and family members. This paper focuses primarily on analysis of high school home economics textbooks, while also taking into account course of study. Home projects were emphasized during the period of rapid economic growth. At that time, home projects referred to superstition and customs. This paper also explores the relationship between home projects and such matters.
