    In this paper, the adaptability of Kozeny's equation was discussed on the relationship between permeability, porosity and internal surface area. The method of determination of surface area as employed in this work result in the measurement of physical adsorption of nitrogen, using gaschromatography, with the aid of the theory of isothermal adsorption by Brunauer, Emmett and Teller (BET).
    In this experiment, the surface area of rocks showed fairly large values of about 27 to 51.1 square meters per cubic centimeter of pore volume.
    Kozeny's constants were calculated with permeability and surface area of each rock. These constants were by far larger than 5, as determined theoretically. However, it was believed that the Kozeny's equation appries when it was corrected by roughness for surface.
    It was also shown that the permeabilities might be related with the surface areas for unit pore volume.

    The synthesis of 3a, 4, 7, 7a-tetrahydroindene (THI) from butadiene and cyclopentadiene was investigated to improve the purity and the yield of the product by the use of polymerization inhibitors or solvents. Without the additives, substantial quantities of other dimers and higher polymers were obtained. In the presence of inhibitors the polymerization to higher polymers was suppressed to some extent and the yield of THI somewhat decreased. When some solvents were used, the reaction proceeded moderately and THI was obtained selectively in the dimers. In the case of ethyl-ether or ethanol, the purity and the yield of THI were about 80% and 38%, respectively.

    This paper reports on dynamic response of a large size flare stack supported by tower for a 300, 000ton/year ethylene plant. Oscillations of the structure due to wind, at Strouhal number from 0.1 to 0.4, are measured. The aerodynamic stability of this structure is better than that of a circular cylinder type stack. Earthquake responses of the large size flare stack are computed by means of the modal analysis for multi-degree mass-spring system. Oscillation due to gas discharges through the stack may be increased in proportion to rate of gas, and a small whipping is observed between burner part and top of the tower. However, the oscillation is not large as compared with that caused by the wind or the earthquake.

    Programmed temperature gas chromatographic analysis of methylesters of durene oxidation products was carried out by using a column packed with Chromosorb-W coated with 30% Apiezon Grease L. The relative weight responses of dimethyl 4, 5-dimethylphthalate and tetramethyl pyromellitate to inner standard material (pentamethylbenzene) were determined, which were 1.15 and 1.65 respectively.
    Pyromellitic dianhydride (PMDA) isolated from durene oxidation products has usually been contaminated with a small amount of pyromellitic monoanhydride (PMMA) and pyromellitic acid (PMA). The gas chromatographic separation of the above mixture was successfully accomplished by converting PMDA to dialkyl dimethyl pyromellitate, PMMA to alkyltrimethyl pyromellitate and PMA to tetramethyl pyromellitate respectively. The reactions involved were alcoholysis of anhydride ring with ethanol or n-propanol and esterification of free carboxylic group with diazomethane.
    The best result was obtained when n-propanol was used in alcoholysis. The gas chromatographic analysis of purified PMDA was in good agreement with acid-base titration.

    On-line data processing system for gas chromatography has been developed. A PDP-8/I high speed digital computer was used, which was equipped with an 8192-word core memory for simultaneously processing up to 10 gas chromatograph channels. The hardware consists of a central processing unit, a multiplexer, an analogue-to-digital converter, a control unit, a device select unit, teletypewriters, and output units. The software is composed of programmes for data reading and smoothing, peak detection, integration, baseline correction, fused peak resolution, calculation, data printout, and their executions. The features and performances of this system are as follows;
    1) Parallel operation of ten gas chromatographs is possible.
    2) A peak with the height of less than 10μV is detectable.
    3) A broad peak having a slope of 0.2μV per second is also detectable.
    4) Reproducibility of retention time lies within a few seconds.
    5) This system gives more precise results than planimetry method with regard to measurement of the peak area.
