Corrosion at overhead lines and condensers of a crude oil fractionator is caused mainly by dissolution of acidic substances into condensed water. To prevent this corrosion, both neutralization of the acidic substances with ammonia and formation of protective layers with filming amines have usually been practiced. Sufficient prevention of the corrosion, however, has not been achieved with the neutralization with ammonia. This paper deals with laboratory-scale experiments concerning behaviors of hydrogen chloride and hydrogen sulfide in the initial condensate and neutralization with ammonia. The results of the experiments are summarized as follow:
    1. Hydrogen chloride is easily absorbed in the initial condensate and is highly concentrated in it.
    2. Ammonia has far less tendency to be absorbed in the initial condensate.
    3. Ammonium chloride is hydrolyzed in the initial condensate, lowering the pH of the initial condensate.
    4. To effectively neutralize acidic substances in the initial condensate, the alkali should be of such properties that it dissolves readily in the condensate and the neutralization product is not hydrolyzed. Kuritop 101 has been developed to satisfy these conditions.
