Studies were made on coking of residual oils under reduced pressures between 760 and 200mmHg•abs. It was found out that the synthetic coals obtained by coking of Kuwait vacuum residue (asphalt) and Kuwait propane asphalt under reduced pressures show good coking properties, especially high fluidity and a wide temperature range of fluidity, both of which are required for coals for a blast furnace. It was proved that the lower the reaction pressure is, the better coking property is obtained. It was also found out that the synthetic coals show the highest crucible swelling index respectively under each reaction pressure when they contain 70-80wt% of pyridine insoluble matter. In addition, it was noticed that the lower the reaction pressure is, the more volume of distillate having neither asphaltene nor metals such as vanadium and nickel is obtained. It is considered that the distillate is satisfactory as a feed to a indirect hydrodesulfu_??_zer.

Studies were made on relationship between coking property of the synthetic coal and the pressures of coking reaction of Kuwait vacuum residual oil.
First, it was made clear that the higher aromaticity of the feed oil gives the better coking property to the synthetic coal. Second, it was assumed that the reason why the synthetic coal made from low aromaticity oil such as Kuwait vacuum residue has good coking property when the reaction is carried out under reduced pressures is as follows: non-aromatic fractions produced by thermal cracking of the feed oil is removed more from the reactor under reduced pressures than under atmospheric pressure, which causes the coke precursors in the reactor to have more aromaticity under reduced pressures than under atmospheric pressure. Third, it was found out that the coking property of the synthetic coal is closely related to the structure of the pyridine insoluble matter of the synthetic coal, and not to the property of the pyridine soluble matter, and that it is necessary for the synthetic coal to contain some amount of pyridine soluble matter for obtaining the good coking property.
